Will deny valid claims, waste of money

Reading the reviews of this pet insurance lead me to believe it would be a fair and safe bet if my 11 year old dog were to develop an illness in her elder years. Unfortunately after paying into this plan for several months, they offered no financial support and took months to even respond to our claims. Our dog became ill very shortly after the insurance went into effect, though there had been no signs and therefore no medical record of a pre-existing condition when we signed up for the insurance. If there had been, I wouldn’t have filed a claim for the illness. Although the condition- a terminal brain tumor- required an MRI for which was purportedly covered under the plan, upon filing a claim as we struggled with how to afford these suddenly overwhelming bills, we waited over 3 months for the claim to be denied. The ASPCA claimed flimsily that the condition had been pre-existing based on medical records describing lethargy and joint pain. These were attributed to old age by our vet, not neurological issues. The ASPCA called and sent emails of condolence upon her passing, but this was empty comfort coming from a company that took my money without holding up their end of the bargain. I feel jaded by this experience. If you have a very healthy young dog and are willing to pay into a plan for years before being able to use it, it may be for you. But you may want to weigh the expense of paying into a costly pet insurance for years against the cost of the actual bills in the end, and also with the added risk that they will use any evidence in your pet’s medical record to deny your rightful claim. I feel I threw away hundreds of dollars and hours of my time. The veneer of this insurance seems great, but sadly it seems they will do whatever it takes, even if dishonest, to deny deserved financial compensation.

The few claims I submitted took a very long time to process. They said they had requested more information from my Vet but my Vet had no record of any requests. I ended up doing all of the leg work. Do not even hope to get through on the phone, it simply won't ever happen. You have to do all of your communication by email and hope they respond to you. In the end, the high limits and high denials did not make the policies (for 2 dogs) worthwhile. I am not renewing for the second year.
