How to Save Money at Oak Creek Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have a 5 year old cat that was showing all classic signs of diabetes (weight loss while still eating plenty, sudden bad breath, increase in drinking & urination). And I needed to establish with a new vet. First & formost i felt like the vet did a great job listening to all my concerns & then individually discredited all of them & heavily implied the diagnosis wouldn't be diabetes. After the labs came back his sugars were sky high & he had glucose & ketones in his urine. They wanted him on insulin twice a day; but their clinic didnt have any in stock for at least 5 days. I asked for a script to be filled at a regular pharmacy & got a TON of push back. I 100% understand that this is a business. But I feel STRONGLY it was entirely money motivated because I choose to get the same insulin at CVS for $35 vs. At their clinic for $165 (plus a week wait). Communication was poor at best & they probably provide excellent care as long as you have money to literally burn. They were also very judgey that during covid my young healthy indoor cats didn't get routine checkups. They also made me come in so they could charge me $60 to 'teach me' how to give insulin to my cat. I'm a nurse & used to give subq fluids to my older cat at home for years. It was a complete waste of an appointment & charge. But they wouldn't give me the script without it.

It was mere luck on taking a chance with Oak Creek Veterinary Care. I wish I would have found them 13 years ago. Dr. Kelly is the most compassionate, educated, and patient veterinarian I have dealt with. She understands vet medical care, and our human connection to our pets. That's a great combination. You won't feel hurried here because she takes the time to make sure you understand your pet's condition; especially when the health of your pets gets complicated.

Forever grateful for Dr. Burguete and the staff here. They are always so wonderful and compassionate. They take the time to explain everything and work out care plans that work for us. Even when I’ve got my hands full with my kids and pets they are always kind an understanding and do everything they can to make visits as easy as possible.

I had to finally face the day I feared the most, putting my beloved 19 year old cat down. The ENTIRE staff made this most heart wrenching moment, into something tolerable and memorable. They gave us all the time we needed to say goodbye, explained the process, and made sure each step was completed to prevent further stress. I was a blubbering mess and they provided kind words and showed so much compassion. Even after the goodbye, they still treated my baby as if she was there and carried her away with care. I cannot express how much their kindness made that terrible day a little bit lighter. Thank you so much to all who helped that day!

Clean, very friendly staff. My pup who is afraid of everyone was comfortable & really liked the vet tech! Vet listened to my concerns & took time to talk. Happy they had an opening for my sick puppy, who is better thanks for the diagnosis! I now have a vet, a happy customer.
