How to Save Money at Alta View Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

All three of my pets (two dogs and one cat) have gone to Alta View and I believe I have had visits with all their veterinarians by now. All vets have been informative, friendly, and compassionate. When one of my dogs passed away, I received a condolences card with hand-written messages from several of the vets, which I found very thoughtful, and I think it speaks to the personal care they provide. All administrative staff and vet techs have also been terrific. Options are laid out very well and vets are very upfront with the cost of each test and treatment. I feel their prices are reasonable. I am usually able to get an appointment scheduled without much delay. I have been typically seen for appointments in a very timely manner. Overall, I would highly recommend them.

Very kind and thorough vet! First time at this clinic and they made me feel welcome. Took my 3 year old husky Xena in and unlike many vets I've gone to, he did a nose to toes complete examination where he discovered that she has a congenital eye defect. Reassuring and fair pricing. Highly recommend this place for your pet's health and well being

The clinic is nice and the staff is friendly. I brought my Basset Hound in for them to assess her dog bit injuries. Dr. Josh was very informative answered all of my questions without me seeming rushed. The location is convenient.

My boyfriend and I took his dog to this vet due to an illness initially on 3/8/23, the receptionist and veterinarian were great, very helpful and seemed to genuinely care for our dogs health. Unfortunately, we were given devastating news that he had a splenic tumor and the prognosis was not good. Our pup took a turn for the worse and we had decided to euthanize him on 4/1/23,, initial check in was not ideal simply due to the fact that they had no idea why we were there. It would’ve been highly appreciated if they checked that beforehand. After getting into the room, everything took a drastic and devastating turn. Manuela Scannell, DVM was the doctor who was going to euthanize our dearest Buddy. This “veterinarian” was beyond unprofessional, lacked sympathy, seemed to be uneducated on the skills needed to euthanize, poor communication skills and simply did not listen to what our family had to say. When it came time to euthanize they took our dog out of the room to start an IV line and give a sedative (which was fine) and upon returning with our dog, she asked us SEVERAL times what his symptoms were (like it mattered at this point), she very clearly did not read his chart prior to entering the room, she seemed to have no idea of our dogs history at this clinic, she did not ask if we wanted a minute with him prior to injecting the medication, just started to inject it immediately. She then proceeded to TAP our dog’s eyeball to see if he was gone and THEN checked for a heart beat, to her surprise and ours, he was still alive. She then attempted to inject another syringe and struggled to effectively do this for several minutes. She did not explain what was happening at this point, just said “sometimes this happens”. She then tapped his eyeballs again and checked for her a heart rate. This to me..was NOT something you’d want to show the family. Thankfully, at this point he was gone. She then left the room without much compassion nor did she ask if we had any questions. We were all very upset at the fact that we had to put Buddy down but having this experience intensified the pain. We left feeling that our dog did not pass away with dignity nor at the hands of a compassionate or competent veterinarian. We will not be returning to this clinic in the future and feel the management should truly evaluate who they have chosen to euthanize these pets
