How to Save Money at Hillcrest Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I took my 10yo Squish kitty here for concerns and they were great! He got blood work done and everyone was so kind. They sent me home with medications for his tummy. The vet sent me an incredibly informative and understandable follow up email with the rest of the results too and kept answering my questions afterwards via email! Fantastic place overall Squish approved

I've gone to Hillcrest since I rescued my pup 5 yrs ago. Although my experience here has been good until now, this last visit left a lot to be desired. I'm not one to write a bad review after one bad experience, but in this case it's a bad policy, which will keep repeating itself. The vet pushed the Lepto vaccine which I didn't feel my dog needed due to him absolutely hating all things water, but he persisted. I agreed to it after being told its only $35. Then I'm told he'll need a booster in 3 weeks. Never being told that is another $35. To make matters worse I'm charged another $40 exam charge to give him the second vaccine. So the $35 vaccine I agreed to is now $110. When I complained to the lady at the desk she gave me a condescending, snarky response saying they need to check blood pressure prior to administrating vaccines and that's their policy. Great! So when I ask the price tell me it's $110 not $35 to get me to agree since I was on the fence. After complaining I'm told to call Delilah the manager because the snarky receptionist can't help me. Unfortunately Delilah is too busy I guess. She never called me back. Come on Hillcrest.

Hillcrest and Dr. Barber are the best! They are kind and accommodating. Dr Barber is kind, gentle and takes his time and explains everything, giving options. I would never go anywhere else again (which I have previously, went to another local hospital in town that never got to the root of my cats problem after several visits!).

Very accommodating staff. My dog had snagged her toenail and ripped it almost completely off. My regular vet didn't have appts available for 2 days and she was in a lot of pain. I called Hillcrest and they got me in the very next morning and removed her remaining toenail and made her comfortable and gave me all the meds needed to help her recover. Very impressed and I will be returning with my other pets!

My brother's barn cat was having issues. We were unable to get her into a vet in River Falls. However, a vet's office recommended Hillcrest and I am glad that it did. When I called and explained the situation, an appointment was made for the earliest time slot -- just a couple days away. The staff and service were fantastic! Everyone was warm and welcoming and made Cowgirl's visit as comfortable as possible. Dr. Lystrup patiently explained our options and gave us her best opinion on how to care for Cowgirl. She was very honest and open in her explanations. I heartily recommend Hillcrest to anyone looking for a vet. I am persuaded to use them for my pet's care.
