How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First time here was amazing! Took excellent care of my cat and listened to any concerns I might've had. They also work closely with Happy Endings No Kill Cat Shelter, 10/10!

I have come here previously for my cats vaccines, tests, chip scan & exam when I initially found her, and I had a great experience with vetco care in the back of the store in 2023. Today I needed to get her looked at because she was acting lethargic and not herself. I scheduled for an appointment at 12:15 at vetco total care hospital, and I got a text message at 10:45 asking if I could come in early so that they could have extra time to see her. I said yes no problem. We went to leave at 11:35 and the car didn’t start, our battery was dead. I attempted to call vetco care 3 times as well as texted them telling them I would not make it at the earlier time I agreed to which was noon, but the set appointment time due to car troubles. On call attempt #3 as we were already on the way in a Lyft the receptionist told us, it would be fine as long as we got there before the 15 minute grace period. We arrived at 12:13 exactly, we were brought back into an exam room which by the way was extremely warm, and then not even a minute later, the receptionist let us know we are “very late” and would not be able to be seen. I explained to her that my appointment time officially was for 12:15 and 12:13 would have been in their grace period for 12 as well too. She told us we would not be getting care at that time, and that she would be canceling the appointment, mind you with zero empathy the whole time speaking to us. Completely flat affect, as if she couldn’t care less. We asked if we could have a moment to talk to figure it out and she didn’t give us that grace, then I asked if there was anything we could work out as it was important she was seen and I couldn’t foresee the car issues and she said, no, but you can schedule for 2:30 and that 12:15 was not going to provide us enough time to see her- keep in mind, even though that was the originally scheduled time. So we went outside in the waiting area by the front doors to call for a Lyft to go to frontier veterinary clinic instead as they accepted walk ins, and we notice their lights were turned off and then noticed a few different vet techs leaving for what appeared to be lunch time. So apparently attempting at gaslighting me about being late so you can go on lunch ASAP is more important than seeing my cat who btw ended up having a fever of 105.1 according to frontier vet clinic. Highly DO NOT recommend them. They don’t know how to communicate, customer care and empathy is seemingly non existent, and they decided despite everything, seeing Opal and helping her was not their priority even though THEY put in the system that 12:15 was an available time for her. There is NO communication between the people working at this clinic. I will never be coming back and I don’t recommend anybody come here either. Go to frontier instead, they are extremely empathetic and professional and actually care about your baby getting urgently needed care and know how to be communicative about wait times and will see you in a timely manner and they have complimentary refreshments in the waiting area and TVs in their exam rooms for while you wait :-) Go literally anywhere else but vetco total care hospital. Until they can get more empathetic, learn how to schedule, and care for their customers, they don’t deserve your business. This all could’ve been avoided had they communicated that they couldn’t see my cat in the first place.
