How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We couldn't be happier with our experience at Blue Pearl. Our dog herniated a disc and lost his ability to move his back legs and was in for an MRI and surgery the same day. He is now over two weeks post-op and is regaining his ability to walk. All of the staff in the neurology and PT departments have been so wonderful with check-ins and answering all of our questions. The front desk staff is also truly wonderful and makes you feel very welcome both on the phone and in person. This clinic likely saved our dog and we will be forever grateful for that!

The exotics team and front desk staff are the most caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable people that I have ever met. The front desk took my concerns seriously, and I know they fought to help me get an appointment. About two months ago, Dr. Mueller saw my dying bearded dragon, Buzz, during her lunch break, making time for me and showing nothing but the upmost respect and kindness. She went out of her way to call me on her day off with results and to answer any questions. Dr. Mueller and her AMAZING staff have been readily available through every step of the process (shoutout to Stephanie and Bridget!). Two months later, I am here for a recheck and he has made almost a complete 180. They saved his life and I could never thank them enough for this. Thank you to everyone that works at BluePearl Glendale, I couldn’t be more grateful for everything you all have done to save Buzz!

Wanted to give everyone a heads up, BluePearl in Glendale (Milwaukee) saw my rabbit Glossy today due to a gi stasis scare. The visit cost me $325 for my emergency visit which in my opinion is a very reasonable cost for the amazing care myself and my bunny received, the treatments, and the many supplies I went home with. Obviously your cost will be different but considering this was an emergency visit, I was so happy they weren't out to price gouge me at my most vulnerable and sensitive time. The receptionist was very kind, reassuring and empathetic, she got me signed in and asked about my estimated arrival so that Gloss could be seen immediately upon arrival which he was. The nurses there were also very kind, straightforward and the doctor herself was really kind to me as well and very reassuring without needing to sugarcoat anything and I honestly felt so safe and in such good hands while I was there. Though they lacked the capabilities of doing much more than an exam and basic prescriptions for an exotic animal like a rabbit, they also offered xrays, sedation and a more thorough exam in an estimate that they emailed to me which was also very reasonable. I'm glad they were available to see my bunny and I would wholeheartedly recommend them should your chosen emergency vet be unavailable or you have a less severe emergency such as gi stasis with your exotic pet as I felt like they were such a warm and comfortable safety net for me and my little man. He's doing good by the way, and I can't thank the kind men and women at BluePearl enough.

I’d like to advise everyone To NOT take your pets here if they are having problems. First when they act like they’re really moving. Then they make you sit and wait and then they ask you How would you like to take care of the animal euthanize or treat it usually takes 45 mins. even if you say treat it they mysteriously die f.y.i. this has happened with multiple animals we have brought there. After they die they quickly rush you to get payment and won’t let you take or see the animal until you have paid. Please don’t take your animal there.

Dr. Martel is in the right business. I have seen her twice for semi-emergent issues with my sweet little rat, Erwin. She is always kind, compassionate, and super thorough. My little guy is three and a half years old, so unfortunately his time is limited. When the time does come to say goodbye, I will be calling her to assist in his crossing the rainbow bridge. Even though a lot of people will say "It's just a rat.", I have never felt that from Dr. Martel. Quite the opposite. I can tell she has the utmost respect for my pet, which means everything to me. I very highly recommend her for your exotic pets! (The name of the Vet Tech is slipping my mind at the moment, but she is also super sweet and kind. Just simply amazing!)
