How to Save Money at Deschutes Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The people at Deschutes are very caring to my fur babies, and to the hoomans. They've been there for us with a sudden loss, and when it was time to say goodbye. They have provided care for 4 dogs, 3 chihuahuas who have crossed the 🌈 Bridge, and my Vizsla. If you need a vet clinic this is who you call.

Everybody in the clinic was super nice and helpful and even carried my cat in his carrier for me. I’m 68 and my cat weighs 16 lbs, it was a struggle to carry him and I appreciate all the staff and including the vet that helped. Dr was very nice and professional, she was very thorough and informative. Had to use urgent care and got an appointment for the same day. Thank you Deschutes animal clinic. I highly recommend you. Thank you for taking good care of my cat Sonny.

The best vet I've ever met. Dr.Murry made my pittie trust in him immediately. She was in so much pain and miserable and still knew he was helping her. She hates going to vets but not here. She showed complete trust and that says it all. Dr. Murray took great care of her and her problems are already on the mend. The staff is great and caring as well. Wonderful team 👏

I unfortunately did not have a good experience here. They were one of the few vets with openings for new patients in the Olympia area (possibly for a reason…). I will start with saying that their admin team seem amazing. I had more issues with the medical treatment we were given. Overall, during my visits, I always felt rushed and the vet never took the time to sit down and speak with me about my new puppy. I had to specifically flag down the techs and the vet to ask my questions, and they were never forthcoming with information and always seemed in a rush. The biggest issue, however, is their lack of medical record documentation and oversight in reading records. They failed to turn over a page of my puppy’s medical records and gave her a vaccine that she had already had. If they had taken the time to speak with me about it prior to giving it to her, I may have been able to show them on the records which vaccines she had already had. They also did not scan her medical records to keep them on file when I brought them in on our first visit. When I asked for them to check their files over the phone to see if they gave her the wrong vaccine, they had to ask me to scan them and send them over myself. They did credit the money back to me for the erroneous vaccine. Upon our second visit, they were also confused about which medication they had given her for heart worm at our first visit since their own documentation wasn’t clear. And finally, my puppy was also identified as having giardia (hopefully no mis-diagnosis there), but they never followed up with me to make sure that the medication worked in getting rid of it. My experience at South Bay Vet with our last dog was much much better and they offered cheaper care as well.

Deschutes Animal Clinic has been amazing to my fur baby and to me. My dog is very skiddish of anyone or anything unfamiliar or unpleasant. She never acts scared or shakes when we go inside or when we go Into the exam room. She allows the vet to do things without much fuss. They are VERY kind, take their time explaining, give options, and give all of the dogs and cats lots of love and attention. I am so glad I switched to them soon after getting my baby. She has been happy and healthy and I feel they have affordable/competitive prices comparably. They really make sure that I’m comfortable with any treatment or care plan. 10/10
