How to Save Money at Veterinary Surgical Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 2 year old little Moly has grade 4 luxating patellas on both knees. After being referred here by my vet she underwent a successful surgery last week. I am giving 5 stars because everyone from front desk to the surgeon went above and beyond to make sure I understood everything from post care to expectations and cost. Unfortunately Molly decided to lick her leg raw and caused some bleeding (unrelated to surgery) in a panic I called them and they were able to get molly in between appointments and even helped me out at the front desk. The staff there truly cares and I highly recommend this place 5/5 stars! Thank you!

When I found out my cat Maeve had a polyp in her ear I was so sad because of what the future looked like for her. I called what feels like every veterinary place in Washington State hoping somewhere could help her and at a reasonable cost too. When I called VSS they were so kind and so willing to help. Any surgical vet place is very hard to schedule appointments with because of how busy they all are. VSS not only got Maeve an appointment in a timely manner but I was able to schedule her surgery 1 week after the consult. Dr. Byron Misseghers and his surgical team + office staff were absolutely amazing and I cannot thank them enough. Maeve is now back at home without an ear polyp acting as if she didn’t have surgery yesterday! Highly recommend this place for anyone needing veterinary services.

We've had an amazing experience here! Both the doctors and staff have taken excellent care of our dog mellow. She had a broken femur and we were able to get a surgery appointment within a couple of days. The surgery itself was without complications and we felt very well taken care of! The doctor and staff checked in with us regularly to see how she was doing. They made sure she had enough medication and did not hesitate to prescribe us what she needed. Her fracture healed excellent she has no problems walking, running, jumping. The scar looks perfect ! She is her usual quirky self again thanks to veterinary surgical specialists ! We would come back any time with any of our animals ! Thank you to all the staff for making such a hard time easier on us and for taking care of her ❤

We’re back home. Great trip to Spokane. The Spokane Vet Specialist’s are amazing!!! I drove 3 hours (each way) with our yellow lab today to see Dr. Misseghers. Definitely worth the drive! We went to a vet near Wenatchee who diagnosed our yellow lab with a bicipital tear on his left shoulder. Their suggested therapy was around 3k 😬 my trust was lost when they told me they would shave a small area… when I picked him up… He was shaved more than a “small area“. Both his left shoulder all the way down to his feet were shaved… Poorly I might add. He looked like a four-year-old shaved him. I decided to get a second opinion because I didn't feel comfortable with our fur kiddo in their care. (other issues as well). Fast forward to today I drove to Spokane at 6 AM and I took him to Spokane veterinary specialists. (I’ve been there in the past with a previous dog). They could not have been nicer, more accommodating, compassionate, and knowledgeable! They definitely are “specialists“ with Dog injuries or muscular skeletal issues. Our dog (110%) does not have a bicipital tear in either shoulder… they redid the ultrasound today… both of his shoulders are totally healthy with no injury. Still waiting on results from a second test. Dr. Missegher's was amazing, compassionate, caring and kind with our yellow lab. Jenn, Donna and the staff there were also great. Caring staff. Authentic. Genuinely cared about our pup and his well being. Knowledgeable staff and definitely experts in their field. Thank you for the great care today for our sweet boy.
