How to Save Money at Pawlouse Veterinary Therapy

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

When our little girl first started going to rehab, she couldn't walk without assistance. After four months of therapy, she is walking again and occasionally chasing birds.

From the thorough evaluation to the subsequent treatments our dog is well cared for! Dr Sowa asked about budget when developing her plan of care and that gave us "paws" to know that she included us in the plan. Her tx to date has shown great improvement in motion...looking forward to water treadmill for strength!

My dog, Dexter, loves the care he receives from Dr. Sowa and staff. They treat Dexter with so much care and personal connection, it's made a great difference in how he is able to move through his severe arthritis. They treat him like he is their own beloved family member.

The vet is great with animals. I got shamed into hoping my pup would regain bladder control via acupuncture- which after talking with other PT vets - isn't possible. Vet tech staff is great with animals. My experience there started great, but it went downhill pretty fast. The front desk gal, I'm guessing, hasn't had a lot of customer service and isn't upfront about charges. I had a couple of months of appts set up and most in the 9:30 am. time frame. One Thursday, I somehow ended up with a 9 a.m. appt. Yes, they did send a reminder text, but it specifically asked that I confirm - and somehow not only did I not see it, not confirm it, but also didn't realize I was scheduled 30 minutes earlier than typical. When I arrived for my 9:30 appt, I was informed that I was actually scheduled for 9 and that my pup would only be able to get 1 of her therapies. She was enrolled in hydrotherapy and acupuncture therapy , of which acupuncture is the more expensive of the 2. I was told to "just pick one"... never was I told I would still be paying for both therapies for that day. To top it off - and make things seem dishonest. The front staff gal wasn't sending me my receipts with each appointment starting on that particular Thursday. After another week's worth of appts ( which it's also important to know that I prepaid for a package of therapies including both therapies) I got insistent that I receive my receipts - via text, email and in-person. Finally I received them. This was towards the end of their phase one of therapy. On "re-check" day, when I questioned the missing acupuncture appt, that's when I was told that I was charged for it on the day I was late. I attempted to let the front staff member know that I should've been informed that I was going to be charged for it on the day that the charge occurred. She got defensive and rude - she really didn't want to hear what I was trying to say - it was obvious she purposefully stopped sending me my receipts in an effort to hide what they had done. After multiple negative experiences with their front staff and checking with other PT vets- we opted to stop paying the nearly $300 a visit and to cease therapy. (not to mention hour drive one way to their facility - and being asked to leave during sessions - so I can't guarantee they actually did anything with my dog...)
