How to Save Money at Shoreline Central Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am beyond grateful for Dr. Paulsen, Hailey, and the rest of the crew at Shoreline Central Animal Hospital. My dog was hit by a car on a very busy rural road and I was absolutely distraught to think I was going to have to surrender him due to me not being able to afford the vet care he needed. We live in olympia and two of the vets we took him to immidiately after the accident wouldn't even intake him because he was not visibly "dying". Then the third clinic I took him to could only amputate his leg because they were not geared for the surgery he most likely required. I was able to get in contact with a rescue that knew about shoreline and she was able to get him into Dr. Paulsen the very next day! Dr. Paulsen saved my boy's leg and for less than what an amputation would have cost!! Being from Olympia with a 3 month old baby in tow I stuck around the clinic for the day. The staff was all very kind and considerate to us while we walked in and out, they updated us when they could and they gave Ruger the care and compassion he truly deserved. Thank you Shoreline Central, Dr. Paulsen and Hailey for everything you did for us!! I can not express my gratitude enough!! Ruger is a very ecstatic boy knowing he has all of his legs and will not be running into the road ever again!!

I have nothing but good things to say about this clinic. I’d been bringing my cat, Luna, here for several years, and the team here has always been incredibly kind and helpful. They offer a lot of services, and I always felt like Luna was in good hands for any vaccinations, wellness exams, dental cleanings, etc. To me, the pricing is fair and I’ve always been given an itemized receipt of the costs, and they accept things like CareCredit which makes any emergency expenses manageable. Over the weekend, Luna unfortunately started to decline for unknown reasons at the time — I couldn’t get her into an emergency clinic over the weekend due to places being at capacity, but Shoreline was able to get us in on Monday morning when I called. They were swiftly able to diagnose the issue being pancreatitis in addition to several other health complications that had arisen. Dr. Isla worked with us specifically to try to determine what could be done, and was able to provide me with several options. Unfortunately, Luna was ready to pass on (the pain was just too much, and this was apparent when I took her home Monday evening after the team spent the day taking care of her and administering fluids — they really did all they could!). The next morning I made the decision to euthanize her, which was incredibly painful and heartbreaking. However, Dr. Isla and the rest of the team were very supportive and did all they could to make Luna as comfortable as possible during her last moments with me. They were respectful, gave me time to make my goodbyes so I wasn’t rushed, and always handled Luna incredibly gently throughout the process. It gave me relief to have been able to say goodbye in such a setting, and to be walked through things like arranging for a cremation/etc. I’m sure eventually I’ll want to adopt another fur baby in the future once I’ve processed more and healed a bit, but I’d really love to continue doing business with this team. Luna has been seen by several vets here over the years, including Dr. Isla and Dr. Franzak, and I always recommend others to this clinic when they need care for their animals. Many thanks to this team for all the compassion they showed my Luna while she was with us.

I love this place. They’re kind, gentle, supportive, and understanding when you can’t do a something for lack of funds. They actually have saved me money: One time I got confused when an old vet called me to set up an annual exam because they couldn’t refill a prescription otherwise. When I got to Shoreline Central, I realized my mistake but they made time for me anyway. However, they realized my dog had been in only six months previously for an exam and didn’t need one. Since they were well aware of her heart problems and it was a medication they’d consider putting her on, they went ahead and refilled the prescription and I didn’t have to pay for an office visit. When putting my dog on a renal diet, they gave me alternatives that included a comparatively inexpensive brand which I would never have thought was okay. But they explained the company had veterinarians who oversaw the making/ingredients, etc. They’re always willing to give alternatives if you ask. They’ve also told me what the next step is for something but told me they don’t think it’s necessary at this time. They don’t pressure you but they do make you aware of issues. When I go in they do mention the dental work that should be done but they never pressure. My dog is old and has terrible teeth (and I don’t want to put her through anesthesia) but even a young dog, like humans, benefits from dental care. The bacteria in the mouth is the same as the heart so tooth decay can affect vascular health.

Dr. Isla is really great, thorough, informative and kind with my dog. I always walk away with the feeling that she would give me as much time as I needed about anything we talked about. The staff is exceedingly friendly and excited to see my dog. I've never had to wait too long but the staff has also been really great about letting me know if there will be a wait or checking in when I have needed to wait. Pricing seems reasonable as well.

I took my cat here for a follow-up visit after emergency surgery. We'd been directed to our primary vet, but having just moved into the area we didn't have one yet. The team at Shoreline heard my story and immediately slipped us into a cancellation. Their facilities are bright and comfortable, and their people are all friendly and easy to get along with. The doctor was warm and gentle with my cat, and handled the whole visit with good humor and equanimity. I would absolutely recommend this vet and am happy to say I have a primary care vet now!
