How to Save Money at Ravenna Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog typically goes to the Northwest Veterinary Hospital, but she got sick over a holiday weekend & the Ravenna Animal Hospital was able to see her within 30 minutes. My dog is reactive and very anxious at the vet, but everyone helped both her & I feel as comfortable as possible. Staff was friendly, understanding, and accommodating. The vet clearly explained several different options for care and provided enough information for me to feel like I was able to make a well informed choice. I really appreciated both the professionalism & the approachable communication.

Have had such a fantastic experience with everyone we’re encountered here. Incredibly courteous and responsive reception staff, caring and knowledgeable technicians and veterinarians. Transparent pricing and billing. So lucky to have found!

Edited: five stars to one star. I really do miss Dr. Donovan being here full time. I don’t believe I will take our dogs here again any time soon as I learned there were some important or rather fundamental things missed during our last visit in regards to the reason I scheduled the appointment in the first place. Maybe these were a miscommunication I’m not sure and it’s not worth risking my best friend’s health to find out. Since this was the second instance of that happening at this clinic I am not comfortable negating the likelihood this will reoccur (albeit the first was 4 years ago). I’m unable to recommend at this time and to those I have recommended to over the years, if you are satisfied with the care your animal is receiving please do not consider this review a rebuke of this clinic. It’s just not meeting our specific needs at this time. Why only one star? I am a bit salty for two reasons 1. The fact that we paid so much for shots at my fur kid’s well puppy visits and they forgot his rabies shot, which is illegal in the city I live in. And 2., that I could not use the online pharmacy without paying for a visit, despite this being the clinic that diagnosed the condition in which I was seeking either the medication I believed was applicable, or medication suggested by the vet. The condition was IVDD, so this meant my fur kid had to experience unnecessary pain. I ended up getting my dog’s medication from the vet I took him to for a second opinion without having to pay for a redundant appointment. In retrospect, considering all of the other red flags I should have done this in the first place. One highlight is that the scheduling associate is amazing! I’m sad Dr. Donovan isn’t here full time anymore, given his status as “The Frenchie Whisperer”, but I will not miss the indifference to my fur kid’s painful condition or the increased costs of services sans the increased level of care to match.

Our cats have received good, thoughtful care there since Seattle Veterinary Associates took over the practice. We didn't hesitate to call them when we adopted our most recent pet in April, 2022.

I couldn't be happier with Ravenna Animal Hospital. My little dog had been ill for several days. I was so grateful that Ravenna Animal Hospital was able to offer care to my dog. The front desk staff was warm and welcoming. The veterinary assistant was wonderful. Both the veterinary assistant and Dr. Donovan had a wonderful way of interacting with my anxious dog. Happy to report that my dog was feeling better within a day!
