How to Save Money at Green Lake Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am not one to leave reviews, but I had a very frustrating experience at Green Lake Animal Hospital. I had my first vet appointment scheduled as I am looking for a new long-lasting veterinarian that is closer to my home. I accidently typed in "Greenwood Animal Hospital" instead of "Green Lake Animal Hospital" into my directions this morning, and showed up at the wrong clinic which is down the street. After promptly calling Green Lake Animal Hospital to tell them that I am running a few minutes behind, and will be there within 5 minutes, they say no problem. Just a few minutes later I get another call from them, when I am merely blocks away, that they have a 10 minute grace period. My arrival time was 2 minutes after their grace period but they insist that they have to cancel my appointment and reschedule. The woman on the phone was incredibly rude and if there was no penalty or cancellation fee, I would have 100% decided to take my business elsewhere because of this customer service alone. I understand needing to keep a schedule at the clinic in order for things to run smoothly, but there needs to be some compassion and leeway for running 2 minutes late. I doubt that would have really changed my appointment much or the service they offered. Instead, I wasted an hour of my morning driving to the vet and back and I didn't even get in to be seen.

There’s no other place in the Seattle area that I’d trust with my fur-son. Dr. Spencer is absolutely wonderful. She’s always patient and kind knowing that my dog is timid and takes time to warm up during every visit. The staff is friendly and always helpful. We’ve been going to Green Lake Animal Hospital for over 2 years now and I have never had a negative experience.

Continued bad experiences with this place - vet not calling us back after countless calls post surgery (after they took our $5k). Was 10min late to an appointment to discuss end of life care and they told us we were too late and would have to reschedule or wait an unknown amount of time. We've spent a lot of money at this place and have never felt truly supported. Update in response to below: These are not the facts. It's amazing how quickly you came here to save face rather than calling your long time clients with compassion to see what you could do. I called this morning to say the situation was critical and asked about cancellations. I couldn't get the dog in the car because he was in pain and called to say we were getting there as fast as we could. We pulled in 10 min after and told my husband to run in while I helped the dog out of the car. My husband then waited 5 min for someone to talk to him and they told him he was 15 min late. We were also not told how long we would have to wait. After spending much of the day in tears, a little compassion would have gone a long way, but this is just one instance among many others where policy is more important.

They made time to see my dog Kitty on a Sunday due to blood in urine and UTI which I really appreciated. I was impressed with Dr. Joyeeta De's demeanor with my rescue dog who bites if touched by strangers. Dr. De was not at all phased by her aggression, and calmly draped a towel over her to examine her, which worked. She was also a good listener and very kind with her follow up call. All the staff there were also so caring and friendly. Great experience.

I have gone to Greenlake since 1984. All the vets have been great but Dr Liz Spencer is amazing! I have very scaredy feral cat who is coming along with me socially but is petrified other people. Liz was just great with Pekoe and allowed her to stay hidden in a towel for the entire visit. Additionally she needed her nails trimmed as Pekoe won’t let me do it and instead of taking her into the back where it is loud Liz said “oh no, the tech can do it in here.” A great vet tech came in and clipped her nails in the room while still under the towel. This was the least stressful vet visit for Pekoe ever. Thank you!
