How to Save Money at VCA Animal Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

By far the best experience I’ve ever had with a vet clinic. The staff is extremely friendly and comforting. I feel like each and every person at VCA genuinely cares about your pet. Our dog, Goby, was neutered last week, the staff was extremely thorough and accommodating. They’ve texted me twice to check in and make sure he’s healing up nicely. The vet provides great education and advice. It’s so nice to finally find a vet clinic I can trust.

My dog Morty is always super nervous going to the vet. We give him an anti anxiety beforehand and he's still terrified to the point where he's clinging to me and shaking. It was my first time at this office so I was a little unsure of how it would go. I took him in today to get his nails trimmed and he was very nervous. The receptionist was super welcoming and gushed over how handsome Morty is. We went to the room to wait for the doctor. A young lady came back and told me she checked out Morty's file, and asked me a few questions about him. I was very impressed that she was so well versed with his history. She took him to the back room and came out 20 mins later with my pup. Usually when he comes out after his nail trims ( at other places), he is whining and anxious, and immediately climbs up my shoulders. He came out super calm and sat on the bench next to me. He didn't want to leave! He was very happy and totally relaxed, which was a first at the vet's office! The vet told me that she went at his pace, listened to his cues, and let him get comfortable before clipping his toenails. She said she gave him lots of spray cheese, and he did so well! She was super nice and very accommodating to my baby boy. All in all, my experience at this office was great! I'll definitely come back whenever Morty needs his nail trims. Thank you, ladies!

Me and my girlfriend took our puppy that we’ve been taking to Vca since he was 6 weeks old , he saw a gentlemen who happened to be the assistant come into the room and he barked once which is normal for a dog , he then sat back and was quiet and the gentlemen walked to the back to go get his vaccine and I heard him saying “he’s aggressive we need to get a muzzle on him , our dog was shaking and hiding behind our legs because he felt so uncomfortable, we’ve taken all 3 of our dogs to this vet , he now has marks from the muzzle due to the Dr saying he wanted it tighter , I will not be bringing any of our dogs back to this disgusting place. The Dr was Dr.smith and the assistant was Nathan Allan , Dr smith made it very uncomfortable she did not respect boundaries and just was rude the whole time .

I've been going here forever! All of my pets go here and I love the staff completely. They are always so caring to my pets and take care of them well. They have treats for dogs and cats in the waiting room to help them feel more relaxed. They were ever so kind to include the price of my kitten's ultrasound in the basic check up fee which saved me so much money. They do love their customers and I recommend them to everyone I know. Their quality of care is always 100%

Unfortunately we were forced to put our beloved family dog down. Thankfully we went to VCA, the staff was so nice. We got her paw print to bring home as well as a coffin for her body. They were so gentile and understanding. Absolutely the best. We got a card in the mail 2 weeks or so later with their condolences and signatures from what seemed like all of the staff. They made a very difficult time a lot easier. I am so thankful for them.
