How to Save Money at McMillin Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Best emergency dental outcome I could have ever asked for. I have a senior chihuahua and was desperate for a tooth extraction. After two days of calling every clinic and hospital in the area, I was lucky enough to find this Dr and have all issues resolved within two hours of calling. I am amazed by the immediate help I received without having to jump through a million hoops to get in front of the doctor with an old dog. Additionally, the price was incredibly reasonable. I am so grateful to have found this vet. Everything about the care, solution, communication and experience made sense and there was zero “sales” vibe. My old pup is so much better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dr E is the Best! He saved our dog. He answered our emergency phone call after our dog swallowed rat poison. He remained calm which calmed me and told me exactly what to do. He cares about you and your fur baby! His prices are always fair. Thank you so much Dr. E for saving our Boy! I recommend this vet clinic 1000% the staff is always caring and professional.

Very good veterinarian. He is straight forward and no beating around the bush when it comes to issues with your loved pets. The facility itself is old and a need of renovations. In addition, getting is and out of the parking lot can be challenging with limited spots... not to mention a busy corner location.

This place was exactly what we needed. We are so grateful to everyone here. Our dog needed a tooth extraction because it was causing so much pain and our pup wouldn't eat. We are so happy that he's back. They did such an amazing job.

I came here today to get my kitties spayed and neutered. They made me wait until they were 6 months old (cats can go into heat as early as 4 months old). So I had asked repeatedly when they were younger if I could get them fixed sooner. They said no they only fix them after 6 months. So I waited and waited hoping the girls wouldn't go into heat and of course they did 4 days before our schedule date (and even if we could go in sooner they were booked out for months). I called in from the parking lot and they came and picked up all 3 kitties, and took them in.. Came back out with the girls. Told me it would cost more and be risky to fix them when they're in heat. So now I have the risk that my girls could be pregnant... they couldn't get them rescheduled to be fixed until JUNE because of their very booked out schedule. And I have no one to tell but on this Google review because I didn't even encounter the vet since they take them in and bring the pets out to you without ever letting you talk to the vet. They wanted to charge me $100 each for x- rays to see if my cats are pregnant in a few weeks. I don't think this is right at all! I WANTED to fix them at an earlier age so this wouldn't happen. If anything comes from this review, they need to change their neuter and spay policies to be sooner so this doesn't happen to anymore pet families. I am very unhappy and I felt very unheard about my concerns today. The only person that answered any of my questions at all was the one that brought them back to me after they got fixed. Other than that I just felt like they were taking my money and didn't care about my situation at all.
