How to Save Money at Olympia Pet Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our little kitten is healthy and happy thanks to you! Brought in our kitten who had an infected spay incision and was lethargic and feverish. She had been getting worse all day and I called all the vets in the area but no one else could take her. I am a student with limited income and was reluctant to pay the elevated rates of an emergency clinic, however it was clear she needed urgent treatment. I ended up paying around $350, which was much less than I feared, and worth every cent. Vet techs were very kind and knowledgeable. My boyfriend and I waited for many hours for her to be seen, but techs came by periodically to check her vitals, which was very reassuring. After she was examined, the doctor came by to talk through treatment options and their financial feasibility. When techs brought little Loki to us she was mewing furiously as she protested her new cone. She had been barely able to stand before treatment, and it was incredible to see her so alert. We were also given her antibiotic regimen right then which was amazing. No need to go to a pharmacy! I received a call later that week checking in on her progress, which was incredibly considerate. Loki's spunk has been restored, her incision is healed, and she spends her days playing happily with her brother.

Everyone here has been so wonderful and accommodating to us while we battle with our sweet boy's late stage kidney failure. We've been coming to visit for multiple hours twice daily and, each time, they're more than happy to give us the food, potty pads, and information that we ask for. Now at 4 days in, they've even started bringing him in with his IV fluids so that he doesn't have to stop his fluid therapy when we're here. We can visit indefinitely if we want to (we would if it weren't for the annoying need to sleep and the much less annoying need to take care of our healthy cat at home). You can tell that they allocate their resources very well in terms of staffing. They're always busy, but never so overwhelmed that they can't give us proper time and energy. If you have a pet emergency, and they have the capacity, I vote you go to this hospital. When we first called around looking for a hospital, they weren't able to see us, but told us to try again later in the evening. They were able to see us then. Expect a few hours wait time if your pet's not critical, but they will get to you eventually.

Wow. My partner and I brought in our 2 month old kitten with a fever and they fixed her up right as rain. We waited a long time, but when her breathing was getting worse I alerted a staff member and they came and checked on her to see if she needed emergency care. Thankfully she didn't, so the wait was understandable since they get a lot of sick pets. The doctor was extremely kind and conscientious, helping us choose the right care options that were good for our kitten and our wallets. They gave her a silly cone and we went on our way. A few days later, they even called us to ask if she was doing okay. Truly a lot of love and compassion there. Thank you 🙏

They came out to "evaluate" my senior dog. Looked at him (inside my vehicle), told me, "Whatever it was, he looks fine now." Then told me it would be a wait. I was literally the only person in the parking lot at 630am. I left and waited for my vet to open 1.5hrs later. My vet said he had a stroke... Definitely didn't feel like I was being heard when I told the emergency vet staff my concerns with my dog...

Our dog got in a fight on a Sunday afternoon, he was hurt beyond what we could treat at home. He obviously needed stitches. We called ahead and were told they could see him but it could be long wait. The triage staff evaluated him on arrival and determined he was stable, I agreed with their assessment and understood that the pet ER is just like the human ER - critical patients are priority and seen first. There were several critical patients to come in while we were there. Seeing the staff grab an animal and literally run to the back to start treatment was all the explanation for the long wait we needed. When it was our turn, the whole staff was amazing. Our dog was hurt and scared, our dog is not aggressive but can be reactive to certain situations - we explained how he would do best and each person that interacted with him gladly took the extra seconds to help him stay calm. We did not expect our trip to be inexpensive. I was very impressed with the amount of information given, treatment options offered, and the written outline of treatment and cost prior to any procedure. All in all, yes it was an expensive visit, but not near what high end of the quote was. They quoted best case/worst case and our treatment was in the middle. No one ever wants to be at any type of emergency room. But we are very grateful for this amazing staff and that this facility is here and open 24/7.
