How to Save Money at Galaxy Cats Vet Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. K & Dr. Wilford have been wonderful with my grumpy senior kitty. They are patient, gentle, thorough, and super knowledgeable. We’ve had several visits there for bloodwork, blood pressure checks, and exams, and I’m always impressed by how clean the office is, how prompt they are, and how friendly the staff is. Dr. K has even consulted with other colleagues to recommend the best course of treatment for my 16 year old “super senior”, which I really admire and appreciate. Marcy is a great vet tech, and I appreciate how she takes the time to make my grumpy girl feel comfortable with treats, pets, etc. We are so lucky to have them in Newcastle and I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone with a cat, senior or not. I have had cats for almost 30 years and Galaxy Cats is by far the best vet clinic I’ve been to. I plan to take both my cats there for many years to come.

Edit to add: I’ve just read the review below me, I have had over 6 appointments including 2 surgeries the last couple of months and have found that their pricing has always been competitive and honest. They’ve never pushed or sold something I haven’t asked for. It’s always been led into as a suggestion and financial topics have always been led in a sensitive manner. I cannot recommend them enough. I’ve met and used 2 veterinarians here. I’ve always had a 5/5 experience. I have a sensitive Persian who is more often then not dealing with something that requires their medical assistance and they’ve been amazing! The facilities are very clean, parking is easy to find, and the rooms are very cute! Every staff member I’ve met is friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. I couldn’t recommend a place more!

I’ve been so impressed with Galaxy Cats and Dr. K. I’ve always taken my cats to a vet clinic with both dogs and cats and didn’t realize how wonderful it would be to go to an office that specializes in cats. Dr. K has clearly done her homework- she’s so knowledgeable about cat specific veterinary research. She doesn’t have a one-sized fits all approach to care but instead develops a customized plan for each of your cats. The office is lovely and clearly designed specifically with cats in mind. Our grouchy geriatric cat needed dental surgery and they took such great care of her. She tends to be very difficult to manage and they made it look easy. I also appreciated that they emailed the treatment plan which included the range of our possible investment. I highly recommend Galaxy Cats! Update: Recently had to take in previously mentioned grouchy geriatric cat who hasn't been meowing right. Dr. K discussed the possible causes and how we'll approach it. She answered all my questions and we've discussed said cat's advanced directive. So long story short, still highly recommend Galaxy Cats.

Best experience I've ever had with any vet. Everyone we met on staff was so friendly, nonjudgemental, and accommodating. The appointment itself was unrushed and I really appreciated how much care they put into making sure my cat was comfortable and as unstressed as possible. I don't think she even realized that she wasn't just there for playtime! All the information I received was explained thoroughly and coherently, including planning for her future visits and associated costs. I also really appreciated the focus on treating my concerns in the simplest ways possible without immediately resorting to medication. I was really nervous bringing her in because she was very overdue for a checkup, and I was worried about being shamed or pushed into things that I couldn't afford, but there was nothing like that, and Beatrice left with her bag of goodies and an unofficial diagnosis of "fat and happy." We will be back for sure!

I cannot say enough times of thank you to Dr. K and her team for saving my cat's life! In July, we discovered that our cat has a lump on her leg. We got an appointment with Dr. K in 2 weeks, but she gave us the bad news that it was potentially a very aggressive cancer and we need to be prepared that my cat would be amputated. The lab report came back exactly like what Dr. K. thought, and she squeezed us into her busy schedule the next week in an early morning for the operation. Dr. K. and her team was very patient with us, and loved our cat like theirs. After the operation, my cat went back home just like her old self, with no signs of serious pain. There was only a very slight drop of appetite for a very short period of time. This was telling me that Dr. K. was very careful with her work, and very accurate with the use of anesthesia drug amount. (Otherwise, my cat would have vomited.) Dr. K also referred us to one of the best feline oncologist in the region. We got all reports back from the oncologist saying that due to Dr. K's prompt reaction, the cancer was not spread to any other parts of my cat. The feline oncologist spoke very highly of Dr. K's work as well, saying that it is "textbook-level, best in class action" to take in order to save a cat's life. The margins of amputation was very clean. Dr. K. got the situation in control within a few weeks. The oncologist told us that there are cases that vets only do an operation after a few MONTHS of a sarcoma discovery, and there is no way to save the cat by then. THANK YOU again, Dr. K and team. You truly are heroes who saved my cats life.
