How to Save Money at Swannack Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give Swannack Veterinary Services more stars, I would. My husband and I can't thank Dr. Jill Swannack enough for being willing last minute to come out to our house, that's over an hour away from her, to look at our cow that ended up getting sick a couple days after having her calf. My husband called Jill, said she was going to be headed our way for another appointment, but even then, she didn't hesitate to squeeze us in, even when it was supposed to be her lunch break! My husband had called other vet offices, that are way closer to us, they either said they couldn't come out until hours, upon hours, upon hours later (which to me seems like they don't care because in some cases hours even minutes could be life or death) or said yeah we can look at her if you can get her into our office. Well sometimes people aren't able to get their animal in for whatever reason and luckily this wasn't the case with Dr. Jill! She showed up at our house, examined our cow to make sure she didn't have another calf inside, gave her a couple shots, told us what was going on, gave us a game plan and prescribed some meds for the next couple weeks to give to our cow to get her back to better health. She even took the time to ask us about our hay/grain that we feed and looked/asked what was in it to make sure all our cows were getting enough minerals. Being the next day after Jill came out and did what she did, our cow is looking/feeling a bit better. Dr. Jill Swannack is the true definition of a Veterinary and this is how ALL vets should be! Thank you Dr. Jill, for having true compassion for what you do, being willing to go above and beyond and then some for our animals we call family.

Jill and her team do an amazing job of treating many species of animals. It's difficult to find a large animal vet and especially one who is so knowledgeable about livestock. She is also highly experienced working with livestock guardian dogs, which is rare. Really appreciate knowing that Jill, Leah, and their team are available to help with all our ranch needs.

Angels. They came forty miles to euthanize my Labrador who was twelve and suffering. I couldn’t get anyone to drive that far. They were professional and empathetic. So much better in home than just dropping the pet of your life off at some office. Never easy letting a pet go but Swannack made it bearable.

We had to put down our 33 year old horse this past fall. Jill has alot of heart, compassion and love not only for our pets but for us also. We met Jill many years ago when she had to put down our first horse. I knew from that moment I found the veterinarian I would use from then on. We have also crossed many paths as our children had horse events together, Jill is amazing as a person & friend. I also love the friendly person that answers phones & sets up appointments. Stephanie is a sweetheart. Thank you all at Swannack Vet. S. Porter
