How to Save Money at Companion Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Since moving here in March, we have taken both our dogs here for their shots and for our younger dog to get neutered. The staff has always been kind and accommodating. More recently, I came home from work and let my sweet boy out of the kennel to find him with a swollen eye and hives all over. I immediately called Companion Vet and they were able to fit me in within an hour. I am so grateful to the entire staff for being so helpful and for squeezing us in. Duncan has made a full recovery! So glad to have found this place! Thank you so much again.

I have two kitties and I know it is difficult to find care for our critters! Companion Veterinary Hospital is so good about appointments and follow-up. They were available a few years ago when no one else was for rescuing a feral kitty - they took the time to wrestle him for his neutering and vaccinations (he is finally starting to socialize better!). I am so grateful to have peace of mind that there is a wonderful group to keep my cats cared for.

The whole experience from the time of first contact to the time I drove away was an amazing experience. Every member of the staff was helpful and caring from the receptionist to the nurses to the Dr. They made me feel like my sweet fur baby was special and important and addressed his issue with love and concern and were able to fix his problem straight away for a reasonable cost! They even helped me in and out of my car. They are amazing! Dr Somerville really has a special touch! I highly recommend Companion Animal Hospital

Writing reviews isn't my thing, but I hope this review reaches the owner or chief vet and sparks some positive changes at the hospital. After a few visits, I've been consistently frustrated each time. The receptionist – you know, the one with glasses, long brown hair, and a tattoo – seems to be at the core of the issue. Her demeanor is far from friendly, to be honest. I wonder if her attitude is a general thing or just my luck or maybe she's having rough days whenever I visit? One thing's clear, though she rarely greets, smiles, or say bye or gives off any welcoming vibes. Here's what went down on a few occasions. The first time I came in, she asked questions for registeration in not friendly way and when I stumbled, her chuckles and condescending tone only made things worse. Things didn't get better on subsequent visits. Once, even with a calm atmosphere, she suddenly asked me to wait outside. No explanation, just a brusque "you wait outside" as she swung the door open. Then today, when my dog (my dog is still a puppy) barked with excitement at someone passing by, she quickly ushered me out again, no polite request, just a stern face and an open door and there was no other dog waiting in the area. One woman came holding her small dog for a bit but my dog did not bother them. It's just that my previous vet in Virginia was quite different. Both me and my dog looked forward to visiting because everyone there was so friendly. But I honestly do not feel that I want to go there again. My intention here is to give constructive feedback, Maybe some guidance or training for the receptionist could really lift the overall service experience.

They have taken care of my cat ever since I showed up at their clinic. After rescuing a approximately 2 week old kitten from morning traffic on a 4 lane road.. I like to say. Who saved who. Lol. 5/12/23 had to take my pet in today. Good visit.
