How to Save Money at Crossroads Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

How Do You Choose the Right Pet Insurance Provider?

Pet Insurance Review makes it incredibly easy for pet parents to select an insurance provider they feel good about. You can use our handy comparison tool to get the gist of what a company offers. Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone was kind and patient with my ancient cat, even when she was … not nice. I am pretty sure she would have lost her eye to a bad infection if not for Dr Bruce. She would have made a fine pirate kitty, but luckily neither of us has to resort to a life of piracy because the cost to keep her healthy was very reasonable- thanks, crossroads vet team!

My pets have been coming to this clinic for 8 years or so and we've been very happy. We've brought our cats and pet rats here, and they've all had generally good experiences aside from a few blips. I'll list some overall pros and cons below for anybody looking for a new vet: PROS: -Dr. Bruce is knowledgeable and experienced with an array of different animals. For both minor and major issues with cats and exotic animals, we've been happy with his care of our pets. -The clinic is always clean, including the waiting area, appointment rooms, reception area and bathroom. -The pricing is better than many other vets in the area. Crossroads always gives you an itemized receipt breaking down the costs. There aren't any random junk fees that you'd see at some places, and the prices are consistent. -The location is convenient and there's ample parking near the door of the office. -Vets are accessible via email or phone for quick questions. They are always quick to give me a call back or shoot me an email when they have a few minutes and it is so appreciated!! Saves so much time and money not to bring the pets in for every little thing. -This clinic is practiced and effective with pets that are a little bit squirmy or a little bit aggressive. We have one cat who needs about 3 people to hold him for his exams; he likes to back up as hard as he can whenever he knows something is about to happen! It's very funny and the clinic is always prepared to throw a couple extra people in the room to hold onto the kitty :) We have another cat who's a little bit aggressive (has a red tag in his file and everything...cute but infamous), and the vet techs and doctors don't shy away from him regardless. They hold him and do what they have to do to give him the care he needs, but kindly. They were also able to set us up with some prozac to help with this little guy's aggression, and it's working beautifully. He seems so much happier. -The clinic has helpful products available to purchase at the front desk like hairball medications, flea treatments, and other things which can sometimes save you a trip to the pet store. CONS: -The online pharmacy is not great. I'm so sorry to say it because it's not even the vet clinic's fault; it's the third party company they contract with, called Covetrus, which has been unreliable. -The clinic is having some trouble retaining staff over the past few years. I'm not sure why this is, could be due to general market conditions or the pandemic shuffle that happened throughout the professional world. -It has been harder to get same-week appointments in recent months, presumably due to the staffing shortages. -Certain parts of the practice are a little bit old school; the office doesn't have some of the diagnostic services on-site that some other vet clinics in the area have. This might bother you depending on your pet's situation or it might not, but for everyday care and exams this clinic is great. -Diagnostics of animals in general can be kind of vague. This is frustrating for us humans, because our pets can't tell us what they're experiencing. We've had a few moments where Crossroads didn't quite get it right, but we felt they were doing their best with the information they had and they pivoted their approach when it was indicated. -There is no online scheduling available; this could save everyone a lot of time if it was offered. Long story short, Crossroads Vet is good in the ways that matter most. Anytime you see glowing positive reviews or scathing negative reviews for a place it feels like only a partial truth, so hopefully this is helpful as a well-rounded review from someone who has been a long-time client. Overall I would recommend Crossroads Vet to folks who are new to the area or just looking to change it up.

Dr Jen was so helpful and kind. The clinic was able to get me in same-day for my injured rabbit. The bill was very reasonable also.

Dr Bruce saved our dogs life when another local vet missed things. We have gone here for years and had nothing but the best service.

The worst vet clinic I've been to! My bird got sick and wasn't feeling better, so we decided to see the vet. We called every single clinic in the area, but every single clinic was booked for a month in advance, except this one. We were so grateful for being seen on such short notice. Dr. Bruce assisted us. Oh boy, was that a disaster! Not only did he misdiagnose our baby girl, but he said that she has less than a few days to live and that we should put her down to ease her suffering. The appointment was about 10 minutes, in which we felt hastened. Dr. Bruce appeared to be knowledgeable, but all he was saying to us was that our baby girl bird is dying. We went home heartbroken. With a lot of research, we were able to save our baby's life. I'm really furious because all Dr. Bruce cared about was moving on to the next patient without giving us adequate care. When I called the clinic to speak to this Dr. Bruce and told him and grateful we were to be seen by him and that he misdiagnosed our girl and that she is doing better, and hoping to talk about further steps we could take to prevent this from happening. His response was, "Glad your bird is doing better, but we will not refund your money, bye". Just save your money and energy.
