How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Your staff saved my pups life on June 6, 2023! None of the ER's in VB would take Moose...we didn't know what was wrong with him. I was in Massachusetts because my mum died that day, I was on the phone with VB ER's, nada....my daughter and husband in their parking lot, being turned away. Shame on them. He had consumed a bottle of muscle relaxers. Dr. Tim (Yorktown) saved his life. Wish you were closer!!!! Thank you all!!!

I drive an hour an a half just to come to this facility. They always take my pets in during emergancy situations. It's just like a regular ER for humans. You can wait for a very long time to be seen and they do go on order of severity but it's been my experience to always be well worth the wait. You can tell the staff cares for the animals that come through. I worked as a veterinary assistant many years ago, I know how this field can be especially now a days with such short staffing. It's a tough feild. I'm very greatful for their facility.

This is our third time coming here for an emergency. We’ve brought in a duck, rabbit, and now my dog. My dog Blue Moon and her sister played too rough and got into a short fight. Blue Moon ended up with about a two inch laceration on her leg that I knew immediately was going to need stitches. We arrived just before 9pm and checked in, there were three others in the waiting room, one decided to leave shortly after we arrived. We got called back around 10:30pm, they examined her and brought me an estimate (the estimate was about what I was expecting, it actually came out to be about $200 less than we were quoted). Right when we were talking to the Dr. a more serious emergency patient came in, so they decided they would keep Blue Moon overnight and squeeze her in to get stitched up between emergencies. We checked in with them at 8am the next morning and she was ready to come home. The staff was so kind and had nothing but good things to say about Blue Moon. We will continue to come back whenever we are in need of emergency services.

Dr Tim Stiff saved our dogs life. Memphis came home and has recovered well. If it wasn’t for this place our dog wouldn’t be with us today. We nearly lost him that night to a ruptured tumor and Dr Stiff immediately went into surgery in the middle of the night.

07/22/2023 I took my daughter's 1 yr old cat Tigger with Taki(who has been having eye issue for awhile, so get checked since taking Tigger) because Tigger started potting everywhere since 21st which was never been an issue before, vomit like 5 times. He looked like having a lot of pain. Try to potty every half hr. and non stop licking his bottom. He didn't wanted to leave cat career. I found plastic string for clothing tag in his stool, so I gave all this information to you. Doc. Stiff came with attitude in a room from beginning. I was so confused why he is yelling on my face, and figured that it was because I asked a nurse Tigger has to be seen before Taki when a nurse said that Taki will be seen 1st since he actually looks like in pain. Dr. Stiff started mentioning how healthy Tigger look even before check on him. He was very sure of his behavior is all in his head(typical cat behavior) and there is no way he is having any kidney issue in his age. He said couple times nice to see very healthy cats since he is seeing a lot of pets in serious pain every day. He said that he can do further test(x-ray & blood work) for Tigger if I am questioning about his professionalism and experiences. He had to say "Really nice to see perfectly healthy cats." before leave the room to remind me again. After visit, Tigger looks like struggling from pain next 2 days. But, he started acting better. I was glad Dr. Stiff was right about his condition till August 6th. Tigger started potting and vomiting everywhere again. This time, he didn't even wanted to eat but drink little bit. Unlike last time, he wanted to lay down around me instead hiding in a cage. I was thinking about taking him to vet but didn't want to take "a perfectly healthy cat" to vet right away, so scheduled his visit(not Animal Emergency Center) on the morning on 8th to give him a time to improve. On Aug. 8th 00:30 am, I went to check on Tigger before going to bed and found him dead. I tried to do CPR and kept yelled his name to wake him up, but he was already gone... I was so not ready for his death and confused since he also looked like tried to eat(but couldn't) couple hrs. ago. I am still struggling and confused what happed to Tigger. You said he is very healthy cat but he is dead 16 days after visiting you. Every times, I see Taki looks lonely. I can't stop thinking about Tigger. They were best friends! they groomed and played each other everyday. They slept next together. My daughter sometimes cry before going to bed because Tigger slept next to her a lot of times. We got Tigger to her as birthday gift after her gerbil died. You charged me $159 for Tigger's visit($394.75 with Taki), but treated me like you are doing a big favor for me and dared me to even visited you. The reason I don't give you a 1 star is because your place was very respectful when I visited with my 16 yrs old cat who struggled from pain for a while and gave me a good memory to say good bye to him.
