How to Save Money at Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Felt very safe and comfortable bringing my fur baby here! I have never had a vet be so detailed oriented and prepared with the incoming records I brought. Props to the front desk staff though because I work in healthcare, and I know a lot of the detailed work falls on them. Hats off to you all for being so thorough with records and transferring to pet desk. Also, Dr. Hanenburg was phenomenal with my doodle Piper. She’s eight years old and has a few issues with allergies that have been unsolved or disregarded over the years; however, I felt listened to, valued, and respected as a voice to my dog who doesn’t have one. I never felt rushed, dismissed, nor devalued as a customer/patient. I’m looking forward to our next appointment with our second dog, Myla. Notice — I only schedule with one dog first to see if it’s a good fit, then I’ll go with the second. This is definitely worth the second visit! Thank you team and staff at Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hopsital. You have set the bar high!

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! After using this vet for 3 years it’s time split ways. Our dog was recently bit. In an effort to get him seen by a vet we called (on July 17th) and were informed there was no availability until august 1st but we could be seen during working hours for a $100 “emergency fee.” I have never heard of such a fee. I think this office has taken on too many clients to properly care of animals. Additionally, months ago my wife took our dog in for a routine visit. My young son was with her and they informed her that my son could not come in the room as “only one person is allowed.” A complete COVID carryover that makes absolutely no sense. Take your business elsewhere you will be happier and your pet will receive better care.

EDITED TO ADD hey Aquia, my name is Audree Rosse. You’ll see that name. ORIGINAL I brought my mini poodle in a couple months ago because her eyes were bothering her and she had a hard time seeing on the stairs that she’s been going up and down on for over a year. The doctors assured me her eyes were fine and that it comes with age of being able to see well in the dark. Currently at the emergency vet and she’s been diagnosed with glaucoma and it is so severe she may lose her eyesight in that eye if she hasn’t already. Avoid this vet at all cost. If properly diagnosed two months ago, this could’ve been managed. My dog has lost her sight because of their negligence.

Greetings Fur Families and Friends, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Travis Jackson the Practice Manager and his fellow staff members at Aquia for extending themselves to help families manage care for their fur babies. Mr. Jackson in particular has definitely been a life saver in regards to helping me align appointments for my pet during a very crucial time (PCS season). Being a reborn fur mommy, I’d anticipated taking care of a pet would required work. However, Mr. Jackson was there to answer all of my medical queries and even went as far to research information I was not yet privy to. I appreciate ALL that he has done to help me. Mr. Travis Jackson you are truly a valued asset at Aquia, I’m happy to have crossed pathways with you. I appreciate you whole heartedly! Sincerely, Ryshena and Royal 🐶

I will start by saying the staff have always been kind and good to my dog who is extremely anxious. Unfortunately, this office is too busy or overbooked for me to continuing going. I have yet to be seen on time since I started using this vet. Maybe I’m just unlucky, but regardless of if I’ve had morning or evening appointments, my dog hasn’t been taken back to an exam room until 30+ minutes after our scheduled time. Most recently, I left without being seen as my dog was clearly beyond his limit. He had been stressed and panting for about 40 minutes, and we hadn’t even been called back yet. The best thing for him at that time was to leave and reschedule. I appreciate that the office is trying to help as many animals as possible, but I no longer think this is the right vet for my dog.
