How to Save Money at Royal Oak Veterinary + Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Royal Oak is awesome. We are new patients and called only 5 mins to closing when our tripod boxer mix stopped being able to walk. Not only did they wait for us to get our babygirl seen, but staff was also professional, compassionate and very knowledgeable. We can’t recommend them highly enough.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Church and her incredible team. My bully pit, Dolly, means the world to me, and when I first brought her in, I was terrified it might be cancer. Dr. Church took the time to really listen to my concerns, explain things clearly, and run the right tests. It turned out not to be cancer at all, but a torn ACL. The relief I felt was indescribable, and I know I owe that peace of mind to her knowledge and thoroughness. On top of that, they also took such great care of Dolly’s teeth, which had been bothering her, and I could instantly tell how much more comfortable she felt afterward. Every single person on the team showed Dolly so much kindness, patience, and genuine care — it wasn’t just about treating her, it was about making sure she felt safe and loved through the process. I am beyond grateful to have found such a thoughtful and skilled group of people to care for Dolly. Dr. Church and her team truly go above and beyond, and I trust them completely with my girl. They’ve made such a difference in her health and happiness, and I couldn’t recommend them more highly.

Wow - I am SO impressed with Royal Oak Vet! I called yesterday to get an urgent care appointment for my dog Ruger since my vet was completely booked. They saw him within 1 hour of calling, he was seen as soon as we walked through the door, treated right there, and we were out in 30 minutes. The cost for this appointment was much less than I anticipated which was a surprise for being seen on such short notice. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. They just called me this morning to check in on Ruger to make sure he was doing ok (he is doing great!). I am very much considering switching him to Royal Oaks because of attentiveness and kindness the staff all showed us. Highly highly recommend them to anyone!

Royal Oak is absolutely amazing. We called just before their hours ended and they were willing to keep the doors open long enough for us to get our boxer/hound mix seen. Dr. Church examined her and knew within just a few moments what was wrong. The staff then followed up by phone the next day and quickly responded to our additional questions. Dr. Church and the rest of the Royal Oak staff are sharp, professional, compassionate, and kind, and we will be returning to them every time with our pups from now on.

The emergency vet close to me was very backed up and had a staff shortage, so I learned of Royal Oak and brought my dog here. I’m so glad I did. Everyone from the front desk staff to the tech to the vet were prompt, efficient, polite, friendly, and thorough. We got in almost as soon as they opened, and they were able to give my dog some blood tests and an ultrasound that indicated that what was happening was not an emergency. I’m so glad I was able to get in quickly to determine that. In addition, they have a really lovely, spacious waiting room for any dogs or other animals who maybe don’t want to be near any other dogs/animals or people. I’m very glad to know of this place and certainly have them on my radar for any future urgent situations. They apparently also do regular (non-emergency) vet care as well.
