How to Save Money at Ocean Veterinary Ophthalmology, LLC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

A few months ago, our 10 year old pointer mix, Bailey, suddenly developed a lesion on her eye. It was very scary to consider the possibility that our dog might have cancer or other serious health and vision issues. After talking to our vet, my wife and I decided to get a consultation with a veterinary ophthalmologist. We did our research and were lucky enough to find Dr. Samuel. Our experience with Dr. Samuel and her office staff has been wonderful. First of all, we found her staff to be responsive, organized and efficient. They were polite, professional and attentive. It was a pleasure to have our phone calls answered by people who were knowledgeable and helpful. They made us feel like they truly cared about their patients. We also appreciate the fact that they got us an appointment quickly. Secondly, both Dr. Samuel and her vet techs are great. We've had 2 appointments for Bailey and on both occasions we were seen promptly. Bailey's examination was extremely thorough and Dr. Samuel took as much time as we needed to help us understand Bailey's diagnosis. She explained everything and even drew a sketch to show us the anatomy of our dog's eye. She patiently answered our questions and carefully reviewed our treatment options. As a result of this, we were able to develop a treatment plan that allowed us to avoid a more risky (and expensive) surgical option. Even though Ocean is a long drive from our home, we plan to continue seeing Dr. Samuel for Bailey's care. In the world we live in, the businesses and services we all rely on often fall short. They're in a rush and seem to care more about volume and profit rather than people. We consider ourselves lucky to have found a veterinary practice that does business differently. Ocean made us feel like they are sincerely interested in the welfare of our pet and they take pride in the care that they provide. It's nice to feel the high level of confidence that we have for Ocean and we're very grateful to Dr. Samuel and her staff.

I have been taking my two dogs to OVO for a couple months now and I am beyond impressed. They are on time every single time, friendly and caring. I specifically work with Dr.Samuel and she is so kind and knowledgeable. She REALLY know her stuff. The front desk and vet techs are quick and willing to help with anything. I feel like my dogs are very well cared for there. It is worth the 45 minute drive. I highly recommend OVO!!!

Dr Samuels and her staff at Ocean Veterinary Ophthalmology we're really friendly and very knowledgeable about helping my diabetic dog when it comes to cataracts and his eyesight. First staff was really great about interacting with my dog and making him feel comfortable and Jene the tech staff was so nice. Truly care about your pet. I recommend if your dog has any problems with eyesight or I issues to bring them to Ocean veterinarian opthamology as I will be returning for future visits. Thank you for explaining everything and all of the professionalism that you gave to my dog.

My 15 year old kitty has had two surgeries by Dr. Samuel for a fast-growing lump that was right above her eye. I know that many vets could have removed the growth, but I was concerned that Mandy would then be unable to close that eyelid or that she would be disfigured by the surgery. I chose to take her to a veterinary ophthalmologist and, after doing a ton of research, chose Dr. Samuel. I could not be happier with the results and my beautiful kitty both has the use of her eye and - I swear - her beautiful eyes still match perfectly. Dr. Samuel was not only highly skilled (we had absolutely no problems recovering from the surgery) but also planned a creative method of preserving the aesthetics of the eye. Everyone was so kind and so nurturing of Mandy that we felt absolutely confident that we had picked the perfect team (looking at you Pam) and our results were terrific. The location is in a strip mall that doesn't look all that inviting but disregard that - Ocean Vet is the place to go if you want highly skilled, artistic treatment for your pet's eyes.
