How to Save Money at Harrisonburg Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have gotten a male boxer puppy for my birthday. He wads born a runt a was bottle fed after birth. We had gotten his big sister a year prior (Sugarbear) same parents different litter. He gotten all his puppy shots and HAH has help my little buddy through everything with compassion and a sense of caring that surpasses at least one shrude and money hungry glue factory of psuedo- Vet clinic Im not mentioning any names (Heartland)! But since we’ve come to HAH they absolutely are the people to trust you furrbabies with.they have C a way of making it feel like family. From the wonderfully amazing front check in desk. The veterinarians are thurough and highly knowledgeable about any concerns I had. HAH is exactly what we needed for our bebies care. Thank you all for your help in all things woofie😅!

We’ve taken our two cats here for several years. The staff is always very kind and friendly! We love Dr. Ward, she does a fantastic job of explaining things and was very gentle with our cat. I’d highly recommend her or anyone from this animal hospital. Thank you so much!

Very unprofessional so glad I found another vet. I would seek care elsewhere. There are a lot of better vets out there that are not money grabbers, like this particular vet is. Also recommending dentals all the time when animals do not need them just another way for them to make money and make an animal go under a not necessary surgery/procedure. Also to add I did say it was my effing dog I do own that. In no way was I cursing at the staff. Also editing to say I was pregnant at the time and my dog was in pain and ended up dying... She could have been on compassionate care and pain meds but instead pushed a dental on me and my family. I just wish the vet would have listened to me and had more understanding rather than calling me a cyber bully when I was disagreeing on a public forum about dog food. (Completely unrelated to my dog and her pain.) I was stressed due to my dog being in pain and hurting and instead of understanding that I was told to find a new vet and pretty much washed their hands of me. To which I was scrambling to find a new vet and to try to help my dog not be in pain. Luckily a vet was able to take me in right away. Unlike the hah who I'm sure would just have you wait months in order to be seen.. We can agree to disagree on what happened I will keep my review at one star. I would just really encourage you all to see the stress and emotional health of owners when their animals are hurting. Rather than benefiting from that and profiting off of it.

These vets are really good. They’re not the cheapest or the most expensive in the area. Their office staff is friendly and efficient. They work a LOT of hours too, being open from 730 to 530 is at least an hour longer than most. Drs are caring and talented. They do all sorts of work, including dental, and they have a doggy day care that the dogs absolutely go crazy for (I don’t have any dogs but I see them in the lobby just dying to go in and play). The vet techs/assistants are the ones you interact with most along with the front desk. The techs are very thorough and caring. They all clearly love animals, even though it’s probably kind of monotonous to do their job! It’s never fun how much it costs to take your pet to the vet, but these guys are fair and standard. I was referred by a friend and now I’m referring them to friends. Make an appointment! You won’t regret it.
