How to Save Money at Pender Veterinary Centre - Fairfax (24/7 Emergency)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Hyatt, and the team of Vets at Pender are truly top of the line and so very passionate about making sure we’re giving the best care to our fur babies. At Pender it’s not only about our fur babies, but also us, as humans, where Pender understands feelings, and emotions are inevitable, and that we share such strong bonds with our pets. Not only that, the entire staff are exceptionally supportive during tough times. We have been patients for 14+ years of Pender and in October of 2024, we faced one of the most devastating losses once can imagine, we said our goodbyes in one of Pender’s private, and homelike rooms and sent our 13 year old fur baby, Bunker over the rainbow bridge. While I can’t remember much, it’s such a blur, one thing that stands out the most to me is how professional, and supportive Dr Hyatt and the staff were. From the second we walked in the door for that very sad day, to the time, hugs and tears some of their front office staff shared with me after Bunker had so peacefully crossed over the rainbow bridge to chase all the bunnies to his hearts content. A few short days later, we received a hand written note from Dr Hyatt, expressing his condolences, and that little touch even though bringing tears to my eyes, made me realize the lengths the team goes to to let you know you’re not just another patient, you and your fur babies are part of the Pender Family…. Now, with a new pup in town, our playful, energetic long haired Weim, Stetson gets the pleasure of experiencing first class service from whom I feel to be one of best vets and practices in the area! Thank you, Dr Hyatt and team for always being there for us! - see you soon! - Amy, Justin and Stetson

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly Recommend! As a professional dog trainer, I’m beyond impressed with the level of care and communication from this emergency vet team. If you’re looking for a clinic that truly listens, respects your insight, and acts fast — this is the place to go. Dr. Padte is absolutely incredible — knowledgeable, kind, and genuinely dedicated to getting to the bottom of things. They treated me with so much compassion and made sure Paxton got exactly what he needed. My boy went in after getting into some bones and started throwing up blood, then we discovered he was also peeing blood. They immediately figured out what was going on and created a clear, effective treatment plan. By the very next day, he was already improving — back to his happy, goofy self with only a little blood left (nothing like before!). I’m so thankful for how seriously they took his case and how well they cared for both of us through the whole process. Thank you for helping my boy feel like himself again 💙🐾

Our dog was having a serious medical situation, and Pender was the only qualified vet care that would see him on a Saturday. Although the exact cause of the condition was not discovered , many possibilities were ruled out. I was impressed with the professionalism of the vet Andrea and the fact that she genuinely seemed to care.

My 10 YO pup was given a poor diagnosis last summer due to a neurological condition. She had serious weakness in her back legs and was starting to have difficulty getting up. I was told she would continue to weaken until she lost mobility. I didn’t want to just accept this prognosis so I asked about physical therapy and was told it might be a good idea. And that’s when we started with Rehab at Pender. 3 months later and my girl is doing great! She’s gained back some of the muscle she lost and is obviously moving much easier. She can even jump on the couch again! Dr Weber and Christine have been great to work with. Our appointments are varied and include some stretching, massage, and exercise. Every week is a little different depending on how she feels and what her body is capable of. We also get some homework, suggestions to continue to build her strength in between appointments. They’re a very upbeat and caring team and I feel like we’re in great hands.

Moved out of this area about 4 years ago and still use this vet for our 4 kitties for any emergencies. Dr Padte was super thorough and caring. He really took the time to explain everything and answer questions so that I could make the best decision for my cat.
