How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Love the veterinarian! She's super friendly and loves our dog. The front desk staff is a hit or miss. I've been reprimanded for being late AND for being early. I recommend the Banfield health care it covers almost all preventative maintenance shots, procedures and wellness appointments.

Never again. Took my girl in for a dental cleaning and very pointedly left my wife’s name and number to be called in case anything came up. Got a voicemail from Mallakova about recommending my girl needing something - I don’t have access to my voicemail because of work and got it after I’d gotten off 2+ hours later and of course it was too late by then to do the recommendation. I go to pick my girl up and I complain about my wife not getting called to the CSC who looked at our file and she said the number and everything was right there! Malkaloka or whatever comes out to inform of how things went and proceeds to blame it on the CSCs, no apologies, NOTHING. If a vet can’t be trusted to follow instructions for a simple thing then no way in hell am I taking my girl back there!

Banfield in Chantilly, needs to be shut down.Dr Hanna Maskalkova, misdiagnosed, a 4 1/2 month old puppy. Dr. Maskalkova cared more about the bottom line. My son, took Freddy to Banfield. To establish a vet. Banfield took blood test, and came back to my son who is 25 and his fiancé is 21. Banfield came back with we need more blood test. When the blood test came back, Banfield, said we need a sonogram.( more money) It looks like Freddy’s liver is messed up. Mind you before Freddy went to Virginia with my son. Freddy had a clean bill of health from the vet down here in South Carolina. I got involved as my sons mother, because my son was feeling that they were taking advantage of him because he was young. And they were being disrespectful and rude, and not explaining what they were doing. And then kept charging him extra money. After the sonogram . I was told from the doctor herself that we will know everything that’s going on with Freddys liver. She calls me with the results and says I don’t know what’s going on so we need a CT scan. It could be liver, shunt, or it could be Microvascular dysplasia. That was the Friday before memorial day. I said enough is enough. I drove up to Chantilly, picked up Freddy and drove him back down to South Carolina. To go to a vet that cares about pets, and not money unlike Banfield in Chantilly. The doctor from banfield, told me Freddy , looks good .(lies) Freddy could not lift his head up. He was lethargic and not moving. I brought him back South Carolina. Freddy saw the vet in South Carolina, well he was moving after he was treated ,Freddy started lifting his heap up. WE HAD HOPE. But the damage to his liver from what Banfield in Chantilly and Dr. Maskalkova have done. It was too great. we had to put Freddy down. Mind you when Freddy was with Banfield within the three week span. Almost 4 weeks. They killed our Freddy. Our vet in South Carolina, found out that Freddy had an enlarged heart, and fluid in his stomach. Which I sent the x-rays to someone in corporate. Which Banfield said that he was all good none of that showed up and all the test and the sonogram that they gave him nothing showed that. In the paperwork in the sonogram, it states no liver shunts. I have that paper. They’re liars and they’re cheaters and they will kill your pets. The doctor is negligent, disrespectful and rude. The whole management team. And a receptionist name.Sepi was rude and disrespectful and yelling at me. Corporate had someone call me by the name of Cesar Colon, he was biased, basically telling the doctor is a good doctor. He’s work with her. Dismissing the proof that I have that this doctor was negligent. We spent so much money to get Freddy healthy, believing that she had the best interest for Freddy. But the doctor only had money money money. I’m my opinion! They don’t care about your pets. Or the emotional stress they put you through or The financial stress they put you through. I speak for Freddy, he will be heard. Someone will be accountable. The first photo is a photo of Freddy under the care of Banfield. I have videos , of Freddy was breathing terribly. And then I have another video of him back with me and breathing just fine. I sent it to Cesar, but they do not care.

I have been bringing my cat Prince here for years! I have to tell you this place does not care about your pet! They care about $! It used to cost 180. for a medical grooming right when Covid started. During Covid they went up by 100. Stating that they weren’t charging the right prices. I understand that but then 6 months later they go up another 100. explanation was we had a price increase. Really? 4 months later I go back for the exact same medical grooming and not it’s $470.!! Are u kidding me! So I asked if there was something they could do. I even pay for the wellness plan (35.) which is supposed to save you $ on most of their services. So I get a call from one of the nurses named Ashleigh. I have never spoke to anyone so rude in all my life! She said there’s nothing she could do to the price and if I wanted to come pick up my pet then just come get him. No let me look and see what we can remove or anything. So I went and picked my pet up. I found another Vet (Potomac Valley Vets) that someone referred. For the same services $240. So I will not renew the wellness plan (I’m sure they don’t care)! I will never go back to this Banfield or PetSmart ever again! Ashleigh needs to be fired! Before you purchase the wellness plan check the B&B website. There are so many complaints against Banfield, it’s ridiculous. When they tell you that you can cancel the plan, yes you can but they don’t tell you that you still have to pay for the entire year! The never keep Drs. Nurses and front desk staff change every few months. Last summer I picked my pet up and got in my car and his carrier was covered in ants! Disgusting! I had to wash my cat and I threw the carrier away it was so bad not to mention the ants in my car! What a nightmare! So they obviously don’t take care of the place! I wonder if they have inspections like other businesses do. I have to check that out. So goodbye Banfield and PerSmart. That’s what you get for loyalty!

Banfield is awesome. They're timely, keep you on track for appointments, shots, etc. The veterinarian is friendly and genuinely cares for our Maximus. I feel like he's in great hands with her.
