How to Save Money at Ashburn Village Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have visited AVAH for over a year now, we have 2 cats (both adopted from Loudoun County), my sister has 1 cat and we have loved the staff and previous Vet. I do know that they have 1 veterinarian (Dr. Murphy) who comes in on Wednesdays and Fridays to help with days off for regular Vet. I would like to start off by saying that there are several very kind, sweet, professional front desk and assistants. Previous vet visits have been amazing and great. However, I am truly disheartened from treatment/service my girls and I received today, with the following: 1. The assistant that greeted us for the vitals was not warm and welcoming. They seemed bothered and annoyed, which was disappointing. Once they saw I was giving them the energy they were giving me, they did change their attitude a bit and was talking to the girls. 2. Once Dr. Murphy came in to see the cats the whole energy was aggressive and uncomfortable. She was rude, gave a bad attitude, and was not kind at all- she gave a looking down on look to them. I know this was not just me because at the end of my visit I asked the assistant for the office manager information and they said: was everything okay? Then I went on to mention that everything was fine but the doctor was very.. and they finished my sentence with : intimidating? I said yes but also rude. They did say, yes, they understood and went off to say that doctor is not permanent only as a sub in. I am a local and enjoy visiting the offices around my home, but I am definitely thinking of looking elsewhere on top of the high prices. If the services are amazing I am always willing pay. Definitely sadden by the lack of welcoming feeling as it has been different previously. We all have our days so I get it with Staff, but Dr. Murphy will not be seeing my girls ever again. Looking forward to meeting the permanent Doctor on my next visit in a few weeks. Totally willing to give an updated review. Picture below of us in the room today.

Fantastic, polite, and thorough staff. Did not blanche at sight of 100 lbs of well-behaved dog. Answered all my questions about neighborhood fox and mange. Called back next day with lab results.

They were great with my very anxious Aussie. The techs and the vet were super careful with giving my dog her vaccines and advising on updated information on dog food and heart disease. For as long as we live in the Ashburn area, we’ll be going to this vet.

I've taken my dogs Choo and Cinderella there a few times now and won't take them anywhere else. The entire staff are super friendly and passionate about what they do. Really makes going there worth the drive. Although they aren't far away the vets in the local area just don't compare. Today I took Choo because he has been having what appears to be muscle spasms and while we were in new york he stopped eating and drinking for two days. Hes elderly so scared me thinking the worst! Took them to the vet today and I dont know if its Murphys law but Choo started acting more like himself. Perhaps he mo wasn't a fan of new york. All I know is this morning I thought the worst and now he's getting back to normal. Thank you so much. Your guidance and advice is beyond anything I can put a price on. Your care for animals goes well beyond just that. You truly care and for that I thank you.

Took my dog her to get her spayed and the receptionist and the veterinarian definitely put my mind at ease while my dog was in their care. They answered every single question we had and were very helpful throughout the whole process and even afterwards for what to look for when it came time to bringing her back home. Truly a good experience and was really affordable compared to other places I looked into for this procedure.
