How to Save Money at VCA Cottonwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We cannot say enough good about the people at VCA when it comes to helping our little angel Scooter. Everyone has always been very helpful and kind in taking care of him. Dr. Cox and Lindsay are both exceptional when it comes to the personal touch, care and concern for Scooters health, quality of life and longevity. He is now 15 years old and going and that wouldn’t have happened without their help and expertise and we are SO so grateful to know both of them and so grateful for everyone else making our chance to be with Scooter as wonderful and long lasting as possible. Thanks to all of you, and God bless you for your love and kindness toward our beloved animals!

Dr. Jones is the absolute best veterinary doctor we have ever had; hands down, no question, nobody has ever even come close. He's caring, gentle, loving, helpful, knowledgeable, and he's just one of those people the goes out of their way to make sure that as much can be done as possible to help our little furry creatures be healthy and happy. He seems to really appreciate his position (a lot of people don't seem to jibe with what the have), and that's rare and awesome! If push came to shove and he just was not able to attend or little family members himself - I truly wouldn't trust the lives of our little creatures with anybody else if they didn't have his stamp of approval. Bar none ... best veterinarian doctor in a 100 mile radius - without question. We'd follow him between clinics until he moves out of state or retires. Truly, there is nobody else we'd trust or little furry family members with. If we could, we'd drop 10 stars! The staff is just as amazing. They've even memorized our pets names. It's like coming home for the holidays :)

I have nothing but positive things to say about VCA Cottonwood. My dog had stopped eating and her gums had turned pale. We had rushed her over to the emergency vet and the vet team did a very thorough work up on her. She was hospitalized for multiple days, and was so much sicker than we thought. What had caused her to become so sick was a mystery, but Dr Bowen was absolutely incredible. He took such good care of my sweet dog, and was very kind and knowledgeable. My dog’s life was saved by Dr Bowen and the other vet staff. He was able to figure out that she developed an autoimmune condition. I will always be so so so thankful for this clinic, they treated my whole family and my pet so kindly.

VCA Cottonwood provided exceptional care once again. Though they couldn’t save my kitty (Meow) last year, they were honest about the severity of the tumor and never took advantage of the situation. More recently, when my husky-mix, Sissy, developed facial swelling due to a tooth inflammation, I called and was advised to come in the morning rather than during emergency hours, as there’s no 24-hour dental emergency. When we arrived, we were seen quickly, and they even fit her in for same-day surgery—something another emergency vet couldn’t offer due to the lack of a dental specialist. My dog and I are truly grateful for the honesty, professionalism, and compassionate care of the entire VCA Cottonwood team!

I had a great experience at Cottonwood Animal Hospital! Vet tech Lindsey was amazing—she carefully and kindly helped remove a seatbelt clamp that had gotten stuck on my dog Nala’s foot. She was calm, patient, and clearly very skilled. Meanwhile, the front desk staff took wonderful care of my other pup, Millie, who was there for her influenza shot. Everyone was friendly, professional, and truly cared about my dogs’ well-being. Highly recommend!
