How to Save Money at Utah Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve had to interact with a ton of vets in the area lately and these guys have been so helpful, available, patient, friendly, knowledgeable, affordable, and pleasant. The vibes are great in the office and with all of the staff. I am switching my other pet over to these guys soon because it was such a nice experience. I trust them after only one visit. I don’t even mind that I have to drive further to get to them, and my anxiety has eased with vet visits.

I bring my bunny and dog here. Everyone is so friendly and sweet from the receptionists and techs to the actual vets. They give you and itemized invoice so you see what you are paying for. They also will give you a call to remind you when your dog is due for vaccines. I’ve also always been able to get an appointment quickly. They used to have a sign where you had to call to check in before entering which was super nice as I have had aggressive dogs in the past and it can be hard to take them to the vet and keep them distanced. You also get a discount if you use cash!

This veterinary hospital is absolutely wonderful. We came across a situation where our puppy was in need of an emergency orthopedic surgery and this hospital works greatly with their customers, they provide great service by explaining everything and anything about what they will be performing in surgery and they don’t make you feel bad about asking questions, and not to mention they are very transparent about the cost, and it is actually quite inexpensive. Going forward I will be using this veterinary hospital when needed (which I hope I never have to again) and I will recommend them to anybody I come across. Thank you Utah Veterinary Hospital! Each and everyone of you are wonderful people.

Attentive staff and great knowledge. I took one of my rescue Australian shepherds here because he was always itching and had difficulty breathing after running or playing until exhaustion. I took him to two other vets that could not identify his condition but on my first visit, they identified he had a collapsing trachea and allergies. My other Australian shepherd suffered a broken arm and they also took very good care of her. Highly recommend

The office staff needs an upgrade. Was in today to pick up my animal after surgery. They called and told me the total for the bill, got cash because they give a discount. They asked me if I would like to schedule a follow up. Set a time and date. Gather the papers my animal and kids and am walking out the door when the receptionist asks if I want the appointment. Confused I gather my kids and animal and come back in to confirm the day and time. She say that is correct then askes me for $45 for the appointment. I tell her I will pay when I come because I only brought they cash that they told me to bring. She then explains that there is a $45 fee to hold the appointment. Wish I would have know when I was getting the cash to pay you. So Now I have to call back and use a credit card and be charged an extra fee for the appointment. Wonderful customer service. Went back to the follow up appointment today, the Vet took the time to apologize and told me that they were going to take my recommendation into consideration. Clear communication is key. We will see in the future if they can communicate better about the additional scheduling fee.
