How to Save Money at Sachse Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had such a great experience here. I brought my cat in after noticing some concerning symptoms, and they were able to fit us in first thing in the morning. We saw Dr. Mathews, who was incredibly patient and informative, taking the time to answer all my questions and helping us find a course of action that fit our needs. About 28 hours later, I became worried that Puck might be getting worse. When I called, the staff had me come back in right away. This time we saw Dr. Pirkey, who was already familiar with my cat's situation. He carefully checked him over and reassured me that there was no cause for new concern. Both doctors were phenomenal — not only in their medical care, but also in how thoughtful and supportive they were throughout the process. From the doctors to the front desk team, everyone made a stressful situation feel much more manageable. I'm so grateful for their help and now feel I have two doctors I can truly trust with my pets’ care moving forward. Highly recommend!

Dr Pirkey and staff always provide great service! Gabby in the front always makes me and my dogs feel super welcome. Dr Pirkey avoids unnecessary charges and takes excellent care of all my dogs.

DO NOT BRING YOUR RABBIT HERE!! First of all don’t have a sign on the front that says emergency 24/7 if you CANT take emergencies 24/7. My rabbit wasnt eating and back legs were partially not working if you know rabbits you know that is really bad and they are going to need care immediately. They took almost a week to get us in only after we called repeatedly telling them it was an emergency. When they did get us in it took them half an hour past our appointment time to get us to the exam room. Then they took our rabbit to the back which is fine except they brought him back after HALF AN HOUR and basically said well seems like hes in pain heres some meds. We asked for some blood work because we knew there was something more than “just some pain” it took them an entire hour in the back to get it done. If they are struggling thats fine but they need to let the owner know instead of forcing it for an hour and a half. Bunnies can die from just stress. The medicine they sent us home with is the more diluted version for dogs and Dr. Pirkey told us to give him 1/10 of what he needed. After we brought him home he was in significantly worse pain than before and could barely walk. We called dr. champagne at carrolten west pet hospital and they got us in that morning. we had to wait 5 min after our appointment time to get in the exam room. She immediately knew we needed x rays and we told her abt the dose of pain meds we had been giving him. She was absolutely appalled Dr. Pirkey would send us home with that. We should have been given the more CONCETRATED version for RABBITS and been giving him 10 times what Dr Pirkey said. Dr. Champagne also prescribed him some gabapentin because he was in that much pain. After many expensive tests and hospitalization we believe he has a brain tumor or trauma that caused this and we unfortunately had to euthanize. If they hadn’t wasted over a week and 600$ of our money maybe we would have had the money and time for treatment but unfortunately we did not. The entire time we were at Sachse we felt as though everyone there thought we were wasting their time. (except the veterinary tech she treated us well) The receptionists were all extremely rude and Dr. Pirkey basically dismissed every concern we had and then seemed inconvenienced that we wanted more tests. This place is disgusting please fund other hospitals that actually care.

The best animal care I’ve ever received. Teddy, my corgi, adores the staff and is excited when we pull up to the building and can’t wait to see his friends. They’re very busy, bc they’re so good at what they do, but when it’s your turn the treatment is fantastic. I’d never go anywhere else!

I highly recommend this place and have really enjoyed Dr. Pirkey over the years and his care for our 15 year old golden retriever. He always provides exceptional care, explains things well to his customers or pet owners, and is very attentive. He has done such a great job with our dog, Ginger. She just recently passed but we are fortunate she lived an amazing, long life.
