How to Save Money at Emergency Pet Care of Texas

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I accompanied my grandmother tonight in taking her older dog in who started having heavy breathing. They took wonderful care of Tiny and were very comforting through the time of having to put her to sleep. The nurses, doctor, and front desk staff was very personable and truly made it feel like us and our sick dog was family. They wrapped her up so kindly for us to take home and bury. We are very thankful for them helping us through such a difficult time.

As a pet parent who would do what is needed for their fur baby, I do not recommend this place. My baby was sick, parvo sick, so I took him here in hopes of the exact opposite of what happened. First they took him back and wouldn’t let me go with him. I wouldn’t let a doctor take my human child to an exam room without me present. Why should I have to with my pup? Second, while they were supposed to be testing for parvo while I was waiting, listening to other dogs crying and screaming with all their might. It made me cringe. I got upset and nervous and said I was ready for him to come out now. So the vet tech comes in and says I understand you want him back in here but this is a process where the vet has to wear certain attire to make sure it is contained and since he has parvo… oh wait, did anyone come in and tell you yet that it’s that? I shook my head no. He said oh well yeah it’s parvo so we have to make sure it doesn’t spread to the others. PARVO USUALLY MEANS DEATH AND FOR DOGS. 50%-90%of the time depending on how early and the care provided. It could also mean BIG BILLS. The tech said this with absolutely no remorse or care for my concern. He left, I started crying. Third. The VET comes in and speaks to me of hefty bills up to $20,000. I told her I literally have $40 left to my name atm after the $330 vet bill for the exam and test but her concern was for the last $40 I had. 👀 She then stated that she could give him an anti nausea shot or something but that was it for $40. 😱 COLD AND UNBELIEVABLE. I was crying even more at this point so I told her to just bring my dog to me. That was enough. THANKFULLY GOSLING VET IS AROUND. I took him to the Gosling and 99 vet in Spring and they saved my babies life! They saw him the very next afternoon of his diagnosis, retested him, gave him the shot, anti nausea shot and b12. He got better, then worse, so we took him back and they gave him another nausea, b12 and an antibiotic and by the grace of God, he is happy, healthy and HERE!!!

I bring my pets here now after trying other ER's. My young dog has severe anxiety & has cluster seizures every few months. I love that they're fear-free and give her anti-anxiety meds when she hospitalizes. I know she screams in the kennel and has to be sedated sometimes. My cat is aggressive at my vet, but he does great at EPCT, plus the cat room is away from the main treatment area where dogs are kenneled. I was referred here for my older for a splenectomy & possible transfusion. I thought I was going to have to euthanize her after xrays & bloodwork at my vet revealed blood in her abdomen and low blood count, but the doctors here assured me it was not her only option & discussed surgery. They ended up calling in a mobile surgeon for emergency surgery. Luckily it wasn't so severe she needed a blood transfusion, but she stayed for 2 days after surgery & I received picture updates from the technicians! They even sent her spleen to the lab to find out why it ruptured & check for cancer. I also hospitalized my Shih Tzu here when she wasn't eating & vomiting. Couldn't tell on xrays if she had something stuck in her stomach, her stomach wasn't emptying even after 24hr. I had to transfer somewhere else for a scope, & transferred back after it was done because I trust them. I'll keep coming here w/ my babies. Pic I was sent of my dog after surgery, feeling good on pain meds!

My experience was.... the tech made it better. The older tech in the room worked with me and my pricing. I really felt it when she said, "we aren't just taking care of your pet. We take care of you, too." I loved her for that. And that she did. I wish I got her name because she was our savior! Thank you for helping us 💕 much love and respect 🙏

This clinic was the absolute worst I have ever experienced in 50 years of having pets. Some of the staff are very kind but overall this place is SCARY! Numerous people came in to get information over a course of an hour or more. When I asked them questions I could tell that they must not communicate with each other. The worse was when the Dr. came in with a very angry and loud tone she preceded to tell me that my pup would probably not be leaving there alive. Not only did she say it once, she proceeded to yell it three times!! Which was the complete opposite of what my surgeon had said an hour and a half before that. The only reason I was using this clinic was because the surgeon was so far away from my home he thought it would be better to stay close to him the first night in case of complications. I had told every one of them that my pup is very easily overheated. They insisted that he was cold and almost in shock. When I was finally able to go back approx.. 90 minutes later, to see my boy, his kennel was extremely warm and his nose was like an old worn out tire, it was so dry. They said his temp was 99 and it should be 101 to 103. The next night I took him to a wonderful emergency clinic that took his temp, it was 99 and they said that was normal! His primary vet also said 99 is his normal temp. People in the lobby were sharing their experiences with what had happened with their pet. Bottom line is STAY AWAY if you possibly can. To top it off they charged my credit card more than what I was told...I could go on but I think you get the general ideal that your pet may be much safer and happier somewhere else. Going from this clinic to the VEG Veterinary Emergency Group the next night was like Motel 6 to the Ritz Carlton. The medical technology, the professionalism, the cleanliness, the staff, their core values, etc. At VEG there was no waiting and wondering in a lobby. You stay with your pet the entire time and get as involved as you like in their care. You are given a private room with a small sofa that makes into a bed. They come into the room during the night to care for your pet. You are happier and so is your pet which helps the healing process. Response to owner's response...   I was told the deposit would be the lower number on the quote sheet but to expect the higher quote depending on what needed to be done. Yes, your office did give the refund the next day when I checked out, but that does not give me access to the money then. As of today it was still not credited back. My primary vet, the surgeon, and the VEG Veterinary Emergency Group all sent numerous texts and emails to check to see how my boy was doing. I only received a phone call from your office after I posted this review and the voicemail left was about the credit. Not one word about the health of your patient. This confirms to me that your office is money focused not patient focused. Oh, I will also add that your office made my pup walk out when he was barely conscious. When I got him back to his primary vet and to VEG they had someone waiting at the door to help with bringing him in, the same with getting him back to the car. They were also kind enough to clean all of the urine that you left on him, which was quite a lot. Another sign that your office does not have a genuine concern and care for pets that other offices do. I rarely ever write negative reviews but the public needs to know when they take the love of their life to your office what they might experience... My primary vet was shocked at the amount of pain meds that were given. Between being over so heated and the amount of numerous pain medications given, I believe it was an absolute miracle that my boy lived through his stay at Emergency Pet Care of Texas. 10/1/2024 It has been 8 days and still no credit for over charging me! 10/2/2024 I finally received my credit.
