How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If you love your Cat please don’t bring them here. My cat got ill and good thing it wasn’t too serious because they was going to let him die. The cat got well on his own and I never got his blood work results. I Call the vet multiple times but they are too busy. I think they take more pets than what they can handle to make more money. They care more about how much money they can make. My fault for trusting them.

Left side of my dog’s face was swollen on a Friday. I was able to get an appointment online for Monday. The Vet examined her and explained everything it could be, but needed to sedate her to check teeth. It was a cracked tooth. They reviewed the list of all procedures and meds recommended with itemized pricing. Luckily their schedule allowed them to do the surgery right then. Everyone (vet, techs, receptionist) was very nice and professional and there were no surprises.

Dr. Klages is Amazing. I have been back and forth since October for issues with my baby and none of the other Vet Physicians was able to give me clear answers. Not even at VEG ER for fur babies. Dr. Klages was able to give me answers I need to hear and really listened to all my concerns. And addressed all My concerns. I wouldn’t want any other Vet Physicians to see my baby.

Vetco in Petco Grand Prairie gets 5 stars & two thumbs up 👍🏼👍🏼 The entire Team did a great job‼️ From check in to check out the visit for our kitty was gentle, efficient and a non stressful event. Our technician, Monique set the stage the way that she initially greeted both me and kitty. Animals really can feel more from pet parents than most realize. I truly believe her handling and caressing from beginning to end made our baby feel at ease. Kitty was even relaxed when the Vetinarian, Dr Rhea Rogers checked temp using a rectal thermometer. What I love about this facility is that there’s absolutely no pressure to “add on things” by upselling. Vetco has various packages and Monique helped me select one that that fit our needs. The package that I got included fecal lab (a tube and a collection spoon was provided to bring a “soft” sample back another day), physical exam, rabies and feline vaccines required by pet resorts or travel. In addition, that package included a 30 day heart worm treatment with a script for 11 more refills. Even though our cat is an indoor only pet, mosquitoes are the carries of the heart-worm parasite. We lost our 21 years young kitty to heartworm disease. Dr Rogers explained like NO previous vet about the danger that mosquitoes pose for our furry babies. In the past, we did not do the heart-worm treatment thinking it not necessary for our indoor pets. We learned the hard way. That was real tough losing a part of the family. I would like to thank and acknowledge Dr Rogers for taking the time and not rushing with the patient’s family. Because, it’s been a number of years, I was prepared to set an appointment for our kitty to get a dental cleaning. Dental cleaning involves anesthesia (putting pet to sleep) and can be very costly. The attending veterinarian, Dr. Rogers found very little to no tartar or plague build up on the teeth. No need for cleaning, at this point. Happy news. I’m not exactly excited about anesthesia for myself let alone our furry baby. I want to thank the entire Team at this Vetco clinic for caring for our furry baby. Great rapport and efficient. I highly recommend this medical facility for your pet’s medical needs. Great job!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I recently took my dog in for blood in his urine. The vet was a different vet than the first vet my dog had seen before. She needed all his information again, even though it should have been in the system. Of course, we’re doing social distancing, so she had to call me to explain the exam. She talked down to me and was very judge mental when I told her I could only afford $85, ($35 of which was the exam fee). She insisted that he was close to the end of life, even though he was barely bleeding. He had gone a few weeks ago for skin issues, and the first vet knew about the blood in his urine but didn’t seem to indicate he was in any real danger. The second vet interrupted me when I had questions, insisted that my dog needed about $600 in tests, one of which is an X Ray, (What? Why? For a urinary problem?) and she would not agree to just do a urinalysis. Her tone of voice was very condescending, and she made me feel like the worst dog owner ever. I asked her what she could prescribe for urinary tract and she said the only thing she could do was a painkiller without the tests. I told her I would bring my dog in again when I had more money for the Urinalysis. I thanked her for the prescription and actually said, “Thank you very much”. She ACTUALLY HUNG UP THE PHONE on me. Didn’t say “you’re welcome”, or “goodbye”. Just hung up the phone. So I went to this place because they offer low-cost veterinary services. But I’m starting to think I should pay the $15 more to go to a regularly priced vet. I loved the first doctor he saw at Thrive Affordable Animal Clinic in Grand Prairie. She loved my dog and was very sweet to him and informative to me. The second vet had zero “bedside manner” with animals and people. It would have been nice if she could have referred me to a company that does low cost tests for animals, or grants for people with financial difficulties. I lost my job due to COVID-19, and I started doing the gig apps to stay afloat (Lyft, Uber Eats, Favor, Shipt). I’m not making near what I was making at my FT job. Just a little compassion regarding financial decisions and the health of my dog would have been nice. It’s a scary time anyway, and I may end up losing my dog on top of it all. If anyone is reading this and knows of low-cost or no-cost testing services for animals, I would very much appreciate the info. My email is: shekinahr@gmail.com. Thanks!
