How to Save Money at Texas Veterinary Ophthalmology

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my dog to this practice for an ongoing eye issue that has been worrying me for almost a year. I had brought it up to my normal vet a couple of times and she told me it was nothing to worry about, so I wanted to get a second, specialized opinion. I am so glad I found Texas Veterinary Ophthalmology and Dr. Cichocki! He very quickly identified the issue and made a diagnosis, saying he hoped to see positive results within a couple of weeks — well, I was surprised at how much her eye improved within just two days with his treatment protocol! I appreciated that he didn't start with the most aggressive regimen possible and said we would only add more medication if the initial medicines didn't show results. I felt this was an honest approach. Some vets I've seen in the past will throw a lot at an issue at once which is tough on the wallet and the pet. Seeing a veterinary specialist is of course not "cheap," but I would say TVO was definitely affordable and well worth the money for the peace of mind knowing my dog was seeing an expert. It never felt like they were just trying to make an extra dollar off us, which I hate to say has been my experience with some general practices in the past. The staff and doctor are all very friendly, and the office is super nice and clean. I hope I don't have too many more pets with eye problems, but if I do, I know where I will be taking them!

This morning my husband and I took our beloved 17 year old Min Pin, Tookie, to meet Dr. Cichocki. Tookie has recently lost his vision due to cataracts and we wanted to see if it would be possible to have cataract removal surgery for him. While we didn’t get the answer our hearts were hoping for, we did get an amazing level of care, compassion, and integrity, along with the gift of knowing with 100% certainty that we were making the correct decision in not proceeding with surgery. Dr. C could have easily seen us and our love for Tookie as a money grab and we would have signed up immediately for surgery. Instead, the doctor performed a thorough examination, asked questions which showed he had good knowledge of Tookie’s history, and then honestly told us that with his age and pre-existing conditions surgery was not a good fit for Tookie. He took the time to answer all of our questions and at no point did we feel rushed or like our situation wasn’t important to Dr. C. We are so impressed with our experience and left feeling like the staff there truly cared. We have seen so many veterinarians over the years who can’t even be bothered and then overcharge for underperforming, so we felt it was important to share our experience with Dr. C. We highly recommend him and his staff!

Dr. C and his team are amazing! If I could give 10 stars I would! They took excellent care of our cat, our sweet angel face, Lou! This surgery has completely changed her life and she is so much happier and no longer in pain. She finally can feel a life without pain! The customer service is top tier and above that they took care of Lou like she was their own! I appreciate that so much. Thank you, Dr. C and team! I’m sending Tiff’s Treats!! 😁
