How to Save Money at Double Oak Veterinary Medical Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can not say enough wonderful things about my experience here. If I could give more stars 🌟 I would. I had my sweet Gracie for only a month when she got very ill. Another vet had missed the diagnosis just 3 days earlier so when I brought her to Double Oak she needed emergency surgery. From the moment we stepped foot into the building we were treated as if we were life long friends!! Dr Watson and her entire staff (Melissa was the awesome assistant) were so caring, gentle and compassionate with me and Gracie. They did numerous tests, bloodwork and an ultrasound right there in office and had a diagnosis very quickly. I am forever grateful for the EXCEPTIONAL love and care Gracie received before, during and after her surgery. I can’t imagine trusting our care to anyone else. I (and Gracie) are patients for life!! You are a blessing!!! Thank you 🐕😊

I’ve been a cat owner for 8-9 years, have visited multiple vets, and never had an issue—until I came to this clinic after moving to Texas. If I could give zero stars, I would. If your pet is highly anxious or needs extra attention, I DO NOT recommend this clinic. From the start, I informed staff that my cats are anxious at the vet and need comfort and reassurance to feel safe. Despite this, my experience here was disappointing at every turn. Boarding Issues: When I boarded my cats, I received several calls from staff saying they didn’t know how to handle them. I had to cut my vacation short to pick them up because the clinic claimed they couldn’t watch them. Upon bringing them home, one of my cats had a large bald patch on her back—something I’ve never experienced at other vet clinics. I was also told my cats would no longer be allowed to board there. Grooming and Wellness Exam Problems: Despite my initial experience, I returned for grooming and wellness exams, which I now realize was a mistake. One of my cats was given the highest sedative dose, yet the staff claimed they still couldn’t work with him. I was charged for the sedative anyway. I dropped my cats off at 8 a.m., only to be informed by 12:45 p.m. that services couldn’t be completed and I’d need to reschedule. The vet was unavailable to speak with me because he was “out of the office.” This felt like a complete waste of time and caused unnecessary stress for my cats. Strangely, the cat who was allegedly sedated appeared completely alert and active when I got him back. While I’m not an expert, this seemed odd to me. I was prepared to pay $1,500 for grooming and exams, but it became clear this clinic wasn’t right for us. Based on my experience, this clinic doesn’t seem equipped to handle pets that require extra attention or care. Instead, I believe they focus on overcharging community members for routine services and are not suited for pets with anxiety or challenges when it comes to the vet. If you love your fur babies and need a clinic that truly cares, please look elsewhere. I have found that there are other, more affordable clinics in the area with staff who genuinely prioritize the well-being of your pets.

We've been bringing our dogs here for years. Surgeries, allergies, vaccines, boarding and general wellness. We couldn't be happier. You might find a cheaper vet, but you WILL NOT find a better one. The vets, techs, and staff are all friendly, caring and careful. They are about as easy to recommend as is possible. You won't be disappointed.

Dr. Wood is the cat whisperer! The staff is so caring and so accommodating. My mother also takes her dog there and has had the best experience. 10 out of 10!

I received the best care from Dr. Wood and his vet tech. They listened to all my concerns and questions. They made me feel 100x better and they helped my cat! The front desk staff was also exceptional and so kind. I cannot say enough good things about this clinic.
