How to Save Money at Avian and Exotics Center of Nashville

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wonderful place to take your exotic pets. Utmost care, respect, and love from the staff here. Very reasonable pricing, thorough and in-depth explanations on conditions and how to remedy, and loads of knowledge to set you and your babies off on the right track to recovery. I am from out of state, 4 hours away, and I'm glad I made the trip here. My other vets said my rat, Shadow, was basically on life support for respiratory infection and wouldn't live long. Scarred lungs, etc. The doctor here said that there was no scarring in the lung xrays, explained what she looks for, and said crackling and other signs of RI were basically non-existent while the other vets I've gone to would say she is on her last limb. She prescribed an alternative antibiotic option in case current treatment failed and expressed confidence that my baby will recover and that in terms of respiratory infections, my rat is nowhere close to the point where concern for euthanasia should be considered, unlike my other vets. They don't offer services for 'normal' pets like cats and dogs due to they predator-prey relationship between many exotics and them, and that's completely sensible and great. All in short, if you need services for your exotic family member creatures, just do it.

I simply cannot express how amazing this veterinary office is. I have never received such high quality of care for my pets before. I had a sick African Grey that I had only had for about 5 weeks and she was having trouble laying an egg and had complications afterwards. I wanted to make sure that I took her to someone who really knew what they were doing. I initially contacted this office 15 minutes before they closed not expecting to hear back until the following day which would have been completely understandable considering I was a new patient. That was not the case. I received a call within 5 minutes and spoke with a very friendly receptionist. They offered me an appointment the very next day. When I arrived to my appointment I filled out the necessary paperwork. We only waited about 5 or 10 minutes before going back. After being taken back, I was asked several questions about her diet, living conditions, previous history, etc. They were very thorough, which I thought was great. The vet came in not long later and she was absolutely wonderful. She took the time to go over everything with me and answered every question I had. She was honest with me about the bad news and told me what we needed to do to get Miles better. She walked me through what to do and not to do and explained everything. She was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and patient. I drove from Cookeville which was about 1 hour 45 minutes away and this place was worth every minute of the drive. I also just want to say to anyone concerned about some of the other reviews about them not getting back to them or never answering the phone...that was not my experience at all. If you call and they don't answer, it is most likely because they are giving the patient they are with their undivided attention and the best care possible.

Changed my review because they don't keep records, gave me half used medicine and food,( was told I would get a new unopened food and medicine on my birds checkup, which I did not receive-I still paid full price) was told my bird was doing great. She passed away 4 days later seizing at the bottom of her cage. I called and cancelled future appointments because she was no longer with us. Just got a call for a checkup appt for a deceased pet.
