How to Save Money at Shoal Creek Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was visiting family in TN. My dog became very ill on Friday evening. Saturday morning I began calling local vets looking for someone to see her. When I called Shoal Creek Animal Hospital the girl that answered the phone was very nice and helpful and told me to bring her right in. They were extremely busy but that didn't stop Dr. Pitts from checking out my fur baby. She was sick enough to be needing an overnight stay. Of course I was scared about leaving my best friend someplace I was not familiar with. Not only did the staff but every client in the waiting area made me feel like my babygirl would be in good hands. While I sat and waited to find out what was wrong I talked to everyone in waiting area and everyone had great things to say about Dr. Pitts. I have to say after picking her up the next day on a Sunday, I knew they were right. Dr Pitts called me Sunday morning to tell me how she was doing, he said if she can keep the food they gave her down that morning she could come home. He then called me again at noon and said I could pick her up. Dr. Pitts was there and handled her release. I felt like his care and concern for my dog was unlike anything I have ever experience at another vet. I didn't feel like she was just a dollar amount for the vets office but he was compassionate and actually cared about her well being. I will be forever grateful for him saving her life. She had severe pancreatitis and he never missed a thing examining her and starting her on the road to recovery. I brought her home later that week and went back to our regular vet. They said everything he did for her all the bloodwork, etc. gave them all the information they needed. If I were closer all of my pets would be clients of Shoal Creek Animal Hospital. They went above and beyond and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Thank you from Valerie & Zillow

What an awesome place with super friendly staff. The parking lot smells pretty rough when it's damp. But, I couldn't have asked for better care for my dog. I travel constantly. I don't have an actual address. I called the other place and was rejected simply because of my address. These guys got me right in. My dog (Socks) was the priority. Excellent care by caring staff and quick testing to get on top of the issue. Not only did I get top-notch care, but the price was super cheap compared to her other vet. If I were to stay in the area, this is the only place I would take my pets to. Very helpful and attentive. They answer questions and explain anything you might not understand. ( That's everything for me) Socks is on the road to recovery thanks to these wonderful people. Thank you so much for being awesome 👌 Pardon the dirty car, Socks did it. 😆

I've been taking my four-legged kiddos to Shoal Creek for the last 16 yrs and I wouldn't take them anywhere else. Dr Pitts is wonderful! He's knowledgeable, professional and just a down to earth guy. He is very loving and gentle with my kiddos. The staff is great and very helpful. So glad I found Dr Pitts and his staff.

We are new to the area and had not yet become established with a vet. Our dachshund Winnie became quite ill quickly, so on a MONDAY morning I called The Shoal Creek Animal Hospital (I had seen in a "newcomer's to Lawrenceburg" Facebook group this clinic and Dr. Pitts were loved and highly recommended) and asked if there was any way they could see Winnie that afternoon or even on Tuesday. The receptionist was so nice, she set us up for a new patient appointment that same afternoon! We arrived, there is plenty of easy parking and the waiting room is welcoming. The receptionist was incredibly sweet in person too. Elizabeth, a great tech, assigned us a room and came in to take Winnie for a weight and heartworm check. She was gentle and kind to a scared, sick little dog. Very much appreciated her! Dr. Pitts was wonderful as well, he assessed Winnie thoroughly, talked me through the several possibilities of her illness and took time like we were the only patient there. He prescribed two medicines and she is much better 24 hours later. We are very thankful and appreciative of this clinic and their staff!!!
