How to Save Money at Hardin Valley Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I chose Hardin Valley Animal Hospital because it looked great on the website, and had excellent reviews. I had heard of "fear free" dog training, but not of a fear free veterinarian office. What did that mean to me and my 6-year-old pug? First, the outside entrance is beautifully landscaped and welcoming for dogs. With clean grass and handy bags, big boulders for a last-minute pee. Inside, the office has wood paneling and a lower ceiling, which makes it quieter and less intimidating. The floors throughout the facility are textured, and not scary slippery under paws. The reception staff is welcoming (like they are actually glad you came in) and on three visits now we have been escorted into a warm quiet exam room without waiting in the lobby with other scared animals. The exam rooms do not contain cold, slippery tall metal table, but a lower bench covered with a blanket or towel. Most rooms have pet-calming music playing. My dog and I were so much less anxious by the time the exam began. Every doctor and tech who provided care and consultation for us was just excellent! They go out of their way for the animal's comfort. And they include you in the treatment process, explaining situations and making sure you understand and feel part of the game plan. Check out was fast, smooth and efficient. I couldn't be more happy with my choice to go to Hardin Valley Animal Hospital!

We have a very reactive dog who we suspect was abused and/or neglected prior to us finding and adopting her. At our previous vet, she wouldn’t even let the staff go near her. We decided to try Hardin Valley Animal Hospital after learning about their Fear Free Certified Hospital status. My reactive, anxious dog now wags her tail when we walk in to the vet office. Every vet and vet tech we’ve seen here has been kind, patient, and considerate of our dog’s mental health. They take their time with her, and if they are worried that she is possibly having a negative experience, they pause and contemplate whether it’s necessary or beneficial to continue the exam and/or treatments. They return my phone calls in a timely manner and their prices are reasonable. The only negative thing I could say about this practice is that it usually takes several weeks to get in for an appointment… but they’ve been able to squeeze us in where they can for more urgent needs. I can totally understand why they are booked up in advance… We are incredibly lucky to have them in Knoxville!

This is by far the best vet clinic I have taken my dog to. The staff is so friendly and helpful. They try their absolute best to ensure my dog is comfortable throughout the entire visit. They listen to all of my concerns and are knowledgeable when answering questions. I also appreciate their fast response times for pharmacy request, etc.

I am most impressed with this veterinary clinic! We had recently has some negative experiences at the vet we had been using for years and decided to give this location a try. I could not be more pleased. We did not wait long to be seen and had been put in a room at our actual appointment time. There was a welcome sign for our pups since they were new patients; it was a nice touch. Every single person we encountered was kind and knowledgeable. The office is extremely clean and welcoming. All services suggested were explained thoroughly and price estimation sheets were provided before any procedures/shots/etc were done. I did not feel rushed, hoodwinked, or as if we were just a number. The vet was patient with all our questions and did not make us feel pressured with scare tactics. I look forward to continuing to use Hardin Valley Animal Hospital for our pets’ care for years to come!
