How to Save Money at Best Friends Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The bad: Saturday walk in is a blessing and a curse. It doesn’t matter how early you arrive, you have to win the phone lottery as to when you are seen. We arrived first, was seen fourth. I would fix this so there was a way to ensure first come, first served. The good: when no other vet would see us, they came through. Great staff, very caring and professional. They give you info and let you decide on a care plan based on you and your furry friend needs. Cannot recommend high enough

I’ve been looking for a new vet for a while after an incident that happened with my old vet, and after an emergency visit with my dachshund I’m happy to say I will be back. The vet was great and the vet tech was even better, she was super nice. Such a great change from my old vet, who’s techs were the whole reason I stopped going. The wait was kind of long, but I’ll take a long wait any day of the week knowing that I can fully trust these vets and my dog trusts them too.

My siblings and I flew in from Florida specifically to put down our childhood dog, Milo, of 16 years (we got him when we’re 4,5,& 9) we were scared to say goodbye to the best boy so we waited until the day our flight was to go out, to take him in. We pull into parking spot 1 and call to let them know we’re there and why and a woman comes to the truck to greet us and tell us the process. Around this time it started to rain. And out boy loved the rain so we asked if we could “do this” in the truck bed. She went in and double checked but got the okay. After having completed the process we asked for nose prints. And they were so gracious taking 8 nose prints for each of us siblings and my parents could have one. But as he was going out he couldn’t control his tongue and put it back in his mouth so it hung there and in order to lighten the mood we asked the ladies for a nose and tongue print for the sake of comedy in a hard situation the kindly obliged and gave us time to process. They were a wealth of knowledge and were able to walk us through in laments terms so we knew what to expect. All in all a very sweet bunch of ladies I regret not having remembered their names but I wish they could feel the relief they provided in being their with us and I hope they understand how great full we were for them!

Though we had a bit of a wait, the staff was very professional, knowledgeable, courteous and helpful. They gave our beautiful purebred Siberian Husky pup Excellent care. The vet spent a fair amount of time checking her out to ensure everything was as it should be and she had her first shots and wormed. Our Sierra is a very healthy 3 month old pup! We are glad for the peace of mind and for the care she received. I would definitely recommend Best Friends Veterinary Hospital to any dog or cat owner. Update. She is now fully grown, healthy as a horse and strong as an ox.

Our family had to put one of our cats asleep as she was old and not well. We just had the same thing done to one of our dogs. They do an end of life assessment. They charged us less to put our dog asleep than they did to put our cat asleep. Maybe they misscharged us? They quoted my daughter a price for the cat. We thought it must go by the animals weight as the price quote was less than the dog charge. They ended up charging us a lot more then the price quote. My husband was livid! They also do a paw print at request. Our family couldn’t pick it up the next day as we live out of town. Our daughter called them and told them we would be in on the following second day. My husband and I drove over there (45 min drive) today to pick it up for our daughter. They couldn’t find it right away. Disorganized and I felt harrassed! They eventually found it. They have a sign on their counter that speaks about that they won’t tolerate aggressive behavior from people. I would say that says it all about this business.
