How to Save Money at Best Care Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot recommend a better vet clinic than Best Care! Our sweet kitty was diagnosed with kidney failure. I reached out to this clinic and they hospitalized my cat immediately. She was on the brink of death and they saved her. Dr. Cozzolino and the staff at Best Care truly went above and beyond what any other clinic would have done. They kept me updated while she was hospitalized and happily answered all my questions while she recovered. They truly care about your animals. Having my cat healthy is priceless. I am forever grateful to this clinic and it's awesome staff :)

Our boy, Boo had a tough life before we adopted him so we're always a little weary when leaving him with new vets or new people. They must've treated him like a king because he came out bouncing off the walls and wearing a cute bandana! He has a heart condition so we'll be there regularly from now on and I'm so glad this is the place he gets to go! Thank you for taking such good care of our baby boy!

Our last experience with Best Care Pet Hospital was not a good one, but only because we had to say goodbye to our dear sweet Maggie. She had started breathing quite heavily and we brought her in to Best Care to see what was wrong and what we could do about it. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and had to stay a few days in the "doggie hospital". When we went to pick her up, I was there with my husband and Dr. Leaf thoroughly explained her diagnosis, what we should be looking out for, explained the meds, how to give them and what the potential side effects could be. He patiently indulged all of our questions and I left feeling hopeful that she would make a full recovery. We followed the instructions to the letter but at her follow up appointment, she had not made as much progress as we had hoped. The next step was to try steroids. That helped her for a short time but after about a week, her breathing became more and more labored. She had almost no energy. The last straw was when I came home from work and she couldn't get up out of bed to greet me. My husband rushed her back in to Best Care and it was determined that she would likely never recover. My husband made the difficult decision to let her go. Despite the fact that the end result was not what we wanted at all, I am grateful for the care she received. The entire staff, from the techs to all the vets, were wonderful. They checked in on her regularly and were genuinely concerned wtih how she was doing. Once the decision was made to let her go, the process was handled humanely and compassionately and she crossed over in a peaceful environment, knowing she was well loved. After she passed, we received a sympathy card, personally signed by the staff members. I appreciate the sentiment, even though neither my husband or I have been able to actually read all of it because it makes us cry. Thank you, Best Care, for caring for our girl. She was truly the "best dog ever" and was certainly treated as such while in your care. I would recommend them to anyone that's looking for quality and compassionate care for their fur babies. RIP Magdalene a/k/a "Maggie" "Maggie Moo" "Moo". We'll see you on the other side someday.

3 dogs + 1 Cat. DR. Lamp and his wife are the best in town in my opinion. Staff is great. The location can be deceiving but it's the only place in Sioux Falls to go through the Extra Steps to become AAHA CERTIFIED. Literally the only downside is that they aren't open 24/7. Thanks you Best Pet Staff for always taking such good care of my pets.
