How to Save Money at Pawleys Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is awesome and I highly recommend them. Last week my chihuahua got stung by a bee and being unsure if he was allergic I wanted to be safe and have him seen quickly. I went to one vet close to my workplace and was denied. They lacked any empathy and basically told me to kick rocks. Within 5 minutes of showing up here at Pawleys Veterinary Hospital I was greeted and my baby boy was being examined. No appointment, nothing. They made me feel like my concern was important to them. Everyone from the super nice lady at the front desk to the doctors were awesome. I feel like the pricing was more than fair and I'll be back in the future!

I would highly recommend Pawleys Island Veterinary Hospital. I have taken a total of 5 of my dogs and cats there over the years. I personally usually see Dr. Kinningham but have seen other Vets there when he is not available. They are all really great. The staff is amazing as well and really helpful and friendly. Thank you for all you do!

I had just moved to Murrells Inlet, SC and within two days I needed to get my Golden Retriever into see a vet. I called three other vet clinics and none could fit me in before three weeks. Since it was not just for a wellness check an appointment in three weeks would not help me. Pawley’s Veterinary Hospital was able to fit me in the next day and they were absolutely fantastic!! The staff and vets were all knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Also, they are very very affordable. I have found a new vet for my dog!!

I came in with a laundry list of things my 18 month old Rottweiler needed. She is itchy. She's pawing her ears. She's losing fur on her back. Her ears stink. She's miserable, poor thing. The vet was so good, he spent a lot of time listening to me, and he never cut me off or made light of what I was saying or the questions I had. He's smiles with his eyes, which you can tell means he's a good person and loves animals. Everyone was so accommodating and friendly. I got a lot of things done, got meds for her ears, her skin, her itching, got her blood heartworm tested, heartworm and flea chews, did a culture for yeast and infection in her ears, and got her vaccines done. That's a lot of stuff: Two different tests, 3 vaccines, and 3 meds, plus a 6m supply of monthly chewables to take home, for $450. It sounds like a lot but the itemization was huge, and I've gotten charged more for less before. We were there for an hour, and not a lot of it was waiting, so I highly recommend them. I wish MY Dr spent as much time with me! We switched from another vet in M.Inlet and I'm glad we did. Nothing "wrong" with the other vet, but definitely everything right about Pawleys veterinary hospital! I'm a loyal customer for life. After 2 years of searching for the right vet, I found them.
