How to Save Money at Cornerstone Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my hen, Pippet, in recently. The first time my brother had to do it because I had a medical appointment, the follow up I got to bring her. The vet is pretty awesome. He indulged a kinda silly question for a minute while I tried to recall the original more important question I had for him and was pretty patient. I have multiple sclerosis so it happens and it was very kind. He was very gentle with Pippet and very thorough which is always appreciated. The nurse was also very good with Pippet getting her weight and such.

Dr. Benson and the amazing staff, from the front desk to the back, truly saved our 8-year-old bunny, Finnegan. The care and attention he received were above and beyond. During Finnegan’s 6-day, 7-night emergency stay, I never once had to wonder what was going on or when I’d hear from the vet. Every morning and evening, the doctor and staff reached out to us, providing all the updates we needed. They even would text when a call wasn’t convenient. They reassured us that at any time between the scheduled calls, we were encouraged to check in if we had any concerns or were just curious about Finnegan’s progress. With Finnegan’s extended stay, they even encouraged us to visit him in their visitation room, which we happily did! I have never received such tremendous support from a veterinary team. Dr. Benson explained every possible avenue for Finnegan’s care, being thorough and upfront with the costs of each option. He did not immediately suggest a stressful surgery. Instead, he and his staff carefully monitored Finnegan with their initial plan of action. After two days, when the results we were hoping for didn’t appear, we decided to proceed with surgery. Although it was a stressful time for all of us, including Finnegan, he could not have been in better care. Now, one week post-op, Finnegan is home and slowly but surely making what appears to be a full recovery. The check-ins from Dr. Benson and his staff have continued even after Finnegan came home. I would wholeheartedly recommend the staff at Cornerstone Animal Hospital without hesitation. I cannot thank each of them enough for their love, care, and comforting support during such an emotional time for us.

Cornerstone Animal Hospital is most definitely committed to compassionate care of our cherished animals. Dr Benson and his entire team fought hard for our sweet Nico! The best diagnosis was given and options to treat allowed us much treasured time to save him if possible. But most importantly, to say our goodbye to Nico until we meet again one day! Thank you Dr Benson. You are a wonderful man and the BEST Veterinarian in our community!

I don’t have enough good things to say about Dr Benson and his friendly and thorough office staff. Dr Benson is the most knowledgeable and trustworthy exotic vet I have ever seen. He keeps updated on ferret research, studies, etc and really knows his stuff. I feel so safe leaving my pets in his care and good judgment. He diagnosed insulinoma extremely early in my elderly ferret and it prolonged his life. I don’t think Pepper would still be here if not for him. The drive to Irmo and braving malfunction junction is worth it for these folks. You will not get better pet care in a several state wide radius. Full stop. His office took great care of me emotionally, which is not their job but they did it anyway, when i was faced with tragedy last year. The situation was heartbreaking (it was in gods hands and out of all of our control) but made better by these kind people and their true care of animals. They always fill Peppers rare and hard to store medication right when I call. Sometimes even same day. If they don’t have a lot, they still let me have some. It’s huge deal that they do this because he needs it every 12 hours. He has NEVER gone without. I am so thankful that I found this office and I recommend it to all of my friends. Going on two years as a pet-patient-parent here and I would never dream of taking exotic pets anywhere else. This is truly the best veterinary clinic I have ever worked with, and we have to move often due to military PCS. Front desk staff always has a real smile on their faces and is genuinely friendly. You can tell the difference when people fake it and they are not faking. They love seeing the pets and seem truly happy to be helping animals. They text me after appointments to see how the boys are doing. It truly is great level of care. I will update the review next time I’m in to include more folks names!! I think the girl I usually speak with is Kat. Kat you are great!!!! Pepper and Vin Weazel love you all and so do we!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do for us. We are so thankful.

The staff is always so welcoming, kind, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. They go above and beyond to care for us and they really truly do care about us and call to check up on us after surgery.
