How to Save Money at Sakonnet Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been taking my pets to Sakonnet Vets for a very long time. It's good to have a platform now to say how wonderful they are. The Doctor's and staff are knowledgeable and very compassionate. The are also very prompt to get you anything you need. I know when I need to take my pets to Sakonnet that they are in good hands. I won't go anywhere else.

Our family has had wonderful experiences with Sakonnet Veterinary Hospital. They are thorough in their examinations and provide clear explanations to any questions we have. The Doctors and Techs are patient and kind with both us and our pups. We highly recommend this practice.

DO NOT TRUST YOUR BELOVED PET WITH THIS PRACTICE. They are poorly managed and have horendous customer support. They have left my dog in a very vulnerable state. Today, my Golden and I showed up for our yearly appointment and was told we had the wrong appointment date. Not believing me, I asked them to come out to the parking lot so I could show them the email confirmation face to face. (Their very outdated 2020 Covid policies are still in place, where the vet tech retrieves your dog from your car and then the vet treats your pet while you wait in the parking lot. Despite being a year long patient, I have never even met the vet.) Only after seeing the email proof, was the vet tech willing to discuss rescheduling sooner than 3 months out. She explained that they rescheduled the appointment and called me. I never received a call. Because there was no vet on duty, they were unwilling to give us necessary oral flea and tick preventative; more importantly, our Golden's rabies and other vaccines are now out of date for our upcoming cross country road trip in two days. They have caused our Golden to go untreated and travel unsafely, until we can find a competent vet and practice. STAY CLEAR OF THIS PRACTICE.

Update! - I called yesterday 4/19/23 to speak to the practice manager she was not in. I left my contact information and did not receive a call today. I decided to call today 3/20/23 after 3:00pm and spoke to her. She seemed more upset that I posted a review before I spoke to her over the phone or in person. The phone call did not end in a pleasant manner. I would have deleted the review had she let us come in for a simple X-ray on my next day off. And have the doctor call me with the results in a timely manner with an action plan. Instead we decided to be terminated as a client of the practice. I will say I did receive the patient record via email rather quickly (After I reviewed their paperwork I had on file and noticed they had an incorrect email on file). Original review below: Very Disappointed in the service we received today. I waited 20 minutes in the parking lot after checking in to find out the appointment wouldn’t be handled as it was scheduled to be. I booked an appointment for an X-ray which was recommended by the Doctor at my dogs physical and shots. We get to the appointment and they won’t do the X-ray because our dogs physical was 2 months ago. They also stated there wasn’t a Vet to review the X-ray and it couldn’t be done. I go in after checking in on the phone and I see the doctor sitting in the hallway in her white lab coat. I guess they were Hot up for money to require another physical. We will be finding a new vet. Don’t book appointments and not follow through with them. Dog owners work too!
