How to Save Money at VCA Metzger Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so full of gratitude for the staff at Metzger's. They helped me through an incredibly difficult day. We had to say goodbye to our Quizno. They were so compassionate, patient, and accommodating. They took us to a quiet, peaceful room where I was able to stay with him throughout the entire process. Quizno peacefully passed in my arms as we sat on the couch together. They thought of everything and even carried him to my car for me. A special shout out to Kathleen(sp). She was so kind to me and made me feel at ease. Thank you from the bottom of my broken heart. ❤️

Our beautiful 12 year old Belgian Tervuren who was having gall bladder and liver issues and not eating freely on her own, had a night of pain and restlessness, and vomiting. We took her to Metzgers AH early yesterday morning, hoping they could save her. I want to thank Dr. Parks for her honestly and the entire staff for their compassion in having to make the hardest decision for our lovely girl. She is no longer with us but our pain is very raw and now we wake up to empty, painful quiet...

My dog wasn't acting right for a couple weeks, and when he stopped eating I tried to get him into my vet. They couldn't get me in. So I hesitantly went to Metzger. (Missed a day of work, and about a 2 hour drive down there)I heard horror stories on the costs from multiple people, but this was my boy and something was definitely wrong with him. Dr Ervine was honest about the costs for the ultrasound and blood tests. She was extremely compassionate, she explained what was happening to my dog, clearly explained my options,. Unfortunately euthanasia was the best option. They gave me time with him alone, brought in a cushion for him to lay on. All the staff were extremely kind, compassionate and seemed almost as sad as I was about the situation. When I picked his ashes up today, they were in a beautiful wooden box, and there was a paw print casting with his name on it. As weird as it sounds, it was beautiful. My previous dogs ashes were presented heartlessly in a plain metal tin from my local vet. That's what I was expecting from Metzger. The staff at Metzger genuinely care about these pets, and the pet parents. I will definitely go back if I'm in an emergency situation again.

My Bailey girl was spayed on Wednesday by my primary care Vet. On Friday night her incision had spontaneously opened causing her organs to fall out. This all happened within minutes. Quickly we rushed her to Metzgers and was met with staff to quickly get her back and start helping her. Shortly after the vet met with us and thoroughly explained what happened, what they need to do, and what we should expect after. She was transparent and thorough with her explanation. Their communication and skills are phenomenal. I cannot thank them enough for saving Bailey, which also saved me. Thank you.

I toke my pet dog (Sondra) in because she had a fever after having puppies and the staff at Metzger were very professional and got Sondra back to good health in no time. She is doing really well now and is back to taking excellent care of her 5 puppies. I would highly recommend to take your pets here. I can say nothing bad about them. Thank you to all the staff and doctor at Metzger Animal Hospital.
