How to Save Money at Choice Vets Pet Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Ben has been taking excellent care of our dogs for years now.  You could not ask for a better, more compassionate veterinarian.  Cooper, our 14-year-old Cocker Spaniel has had various health issues over the years.  Most recently Cooper developed fluid around his heart and lungs along with an enlarged spleen that if left unchecked would have been fatal.  Dr. Ben quickly assessed Cooper's condition and recommended surgery to remove his spleen.  Dr. Ben performed the emergency surgery, and it went off without a hitch; Cooper was his old self in no time flat.  After Cooper returned home Dr. Ben would check up on him to see how he was doing, which is a testament to Dr. Ben's character. Very recently Cooper started his day as usual but suddenly developed balance issues and started listing to one side and had difficulty holding his head up.  Shortly thereafter Cooper started doing nothing but walking in tight circles until he would just collapse only to repeat this process.  Furthermore, Cooper started walking into objects as if he was suddenly blind.  My wife and I came to the conclusion that Cooper suffered some sort of stroke.  It was gut wrenching to watch and obvious that Cooper was in distress.  Although neither one of us wanted to say or admit it, sadly we both knew Cooper's time had come. I called Choice Vets on Friday and spoke with Nathan and asked if Dr. Ben was in the office along with explaining what was going on with Cooper.  Nathan indicated that Dr. Ben was out of the office and asked if this was something that could wait until Monday.  Since my wife and felt as though Cooper was suffering, we determined that waiting until Monday was not an option.  I selfishly asked Nathan if there was a way to track Dr. Ben down.  Rather than just taking the high road and saying that Dr. Ben was off and could not be reached Nathan indicated that he would work with his office manager to see if they could initiate contact with Dr. Ben.  Nathan called back and said that they were able to reach Dr. Ben, and he would be coming to our home to put Cooper to rest.  Although this was the last thing that my wife and I wanted to have happen we felt an overwhelming sense of relief knowing that Dr. Ben was coming.  When Dr. Ben arrived, my wife and Cooper were on the floor together, Dr. Ben knelt down on the floor and greeted Cooper like he was seeing an old friend.  In a soothing voice, probably more for our benefit, he spoke to and comforted Cooper.  Dr. Ben made the preparations explaining what he was doing every step of the way.  Just prior to delivering the final dose he asked my wife if she wanted him to say a prayer......my wife acknowledged and Dr. Ben said the most beautiful prayer over Cooper.  We could not have asked for a more peaceful and dignified end of life for our beloved Cooper.  We are and will be forever grateful to Dr. Ben.
