How to Save Money at Gardens Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my cat there to get her teeth clean. Ended up she needed 4 teeth pulled. Dr. Kaffenes took really good care of my baby. All the techs were so friendly. The people at the front desk were so kind. If you need a vet I would recommend this place or Animal General. They are own by the same people

If I could give negative stars I would. My Cane Corso was a patient at gardens since we got him so when he developed a lump on his groin, which Schulz diagnosed as a lipoma it only seemed reasonable to have them remove it. On the day of the scheduled surgery, we dropped Dozer off at 7am. At about 1pm we received a call telling us that we could pick him up at 4:30pm and we were instructed to bring in baby diapers and junior sweat pants so they would show us how to tend to the wound. We did as instructed and upon arrival Schultz met with us in the exam room and told us that the lump looked more like a hematoma and he had to get aggressive while removing it and it burst. He also told us that Dozer was still bleeding and he had drains in the incision. He suggested that we go get a cup of coffee and return in 45 minutes to give him time to wrap the wound and try to stop the bleeding. We returned and Shultz informed us he couldn’t stop the bleeding. We asked to see Dozer and Shultz lead us to the back where Dozer was still laid out on a gurney and looked pitiful. We asked if we should leave him there, take him home or what, we didn’t know. Shultz told us they had nobody there to care for him overnight and they would be closing soon so we could not leave him at Gardens. He suggested to us that we take Dozer to Blue Pearl Emergency Hospital. We asked for help loading him into the car and to also call the hospital to let them know we were on our way. As we were leaving my wife again asked if they would please call Blue Pearl and tell them we were coming, they said they would call. We arrived at Blue Pearl and when I went into the front desk I told them my name and said you should be expecting us. Well, they never got a phone call from anybody at Gardens. They asked about any medication he may have been given and other particulars regarding his surgery but we were unable to give them because I tried calling Gardens all I got was voicemail. Blue Pearl did their evaluation and concluded that Dozer was anemic and that the lump was most suspicious of a hemangiosarcoma nodule. Blue Pearl said they could perform surgery to possibly stop the bleeding but there was no guarantee of life expectancy nor the quality of life if this were cancerous. Unfortunately, the decision was made to euthanize Dozer. To this day we have not received a card or any other form of sympathy from Gardens. This all could have been avoided had James Schultz been at all qualified.

Dr. Marc has been my rat vet for many years now. He is an extremely rat savvy vet with amazing surgical skills. In addition to Dr. Marc doing an outstanding job, every single Veterinary Technician whom has ever helped me has treated me with kindness and compassion. I do not remember all of the Tech’s names, but I know Damien has helped me and my girls on multiple occasions. The receptionists also go above and beyond—Peggy you’re the sweetest. I love the quiet location of this practice. While veterinary costs are rising all across the nation, I have never felt price gouged or upsold on any type of treatment here. I cannot thank you all enough for all of the kindness and compassion you have shown me and my pets throughout the years. I highly recommend this practice and its staff!

Everyone here is wonderful. Dr. Mike is the absolute best and worth the 2+ hour drive I take to bring my dog here. They really treat your pet like their own. I'm so glad I found them.
