How to Save Money at Wilvet Salem Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thank you for giving my sweet Aria such loving and dignified care in the end. I miss her every day and I’m grateful Dr Schneider was there because I know she did everything she could to help. Thank you again for being so professional and as caring as a human could be in such a difficult and important job. It’s hard making this review because obviously I would have loved for it to go differently, but I am grateful every day that Aria was shown the love and respect she deserved up to the end. Thank you again for caring about what you do.

All I can say is WOW! What an incredible team they have at Wilvet Salem! We brought in our French Bulldog who was in labor yesterday. We were tired and scared, but obviously came to the right place. They helped us birth 6 beautiful puppies! We were there for about 9 hours total, and the whole time I felt like we were the only patients there because the staff and Doctor were so attentive! Not once did I feel like an inconvenience. They were amazing with our girl Oakley and her puppies, and even made sure we had snacks and drinks. I have never received care like this before. Dr. Haze (sp?) and her assistant (sorry can’t remember your name, I was exhausted) were amazing and clearly knew what they were doing, not to mention just so nice! I’m just so thankful that Oakley was in their care. Can’t recommend this place enough and if I ever have another emergency this will be my first call. Top Notch

The staff was kind, efficient, helpful and knowledgeable. They communicated clearly and took good care of my puppy. I’m thankful for a helpful place that is open after hours and on weekends! Yes, you will have to wait awhile if your pet is stable, but that is understandable, the staff is doing their job well - caring for the most urgent needs first. I will be returning with my pets for future urgent/emergency needs. Thank you, Wilvet for serving our community well! 😊

We had an unfortunate accident where we hit a kitty while driving. We immediately brought him in to WilVet. Mind you, this was around 1am. They rushed us in and kept us informed the whole time. Each member of the team was compassionate and allowed us time to grieve and gave us a personal room until we were ready. They also went out of their way to send us a card. We have felt a lot of guilt about hitting the kitty (we called him Levi) and though he wasn’t our pet, we’re happy to know WilVet was caring for him in the end.

I don't typically leave reviews but I came in very distraught at midnight after finding a little kitten had been under my car. He was injured quite badly so I rushed him to urgent care. They quickly took him in and x-rayed. It was very expensive but they outlined the costs clearly, they were incredibly compassionate, positive and put in the highest quality care. I got constant updates on his progress through the night and day. He had brain swelling from the accident and could only cry. Despite all that they gave me enough hope that I wanted to continue his care. That was a couple weeks ago, he was released and now is a very bright and playful kitten. I'm very greatful I don't have to live with any guilt and got a kitten off the streets. Thank you to all the caring staff who put in their best efforts.
