How to Save Money at Heartstrings Pet Hospice In-Home Euthanasia & Aftercare

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I give 5 stars to Dr Katie Huter! I adopted a senior rescue dog with multiple health issues a few years ago. My pet and I are so fortunate to have Dr. Huter as our vet! She is competent, knowledgeable and skilled. She is caring, compassionate and patient. I am comfortable and trust her suggestions for the medical path for my pet. She's gentle with my pet. I highly recommend Dr. Huter because she is sensitive, caring and competent to the needs of the pet and parent.

When I moved to Ohio with my senior dog Hera, I was lucky to be referred to Dr. Katie Huter and I truly can’t imagine a more compassionate, grounded, and deeply intuitive veterinarian to have supported me through Hera’s end-of-life journey. Dr. Huter has a rare gift: she not only understands animals, but she also understands you, the human navigating one of the hardest decisions you’ll ever have to make. She was instrumental in Hera’s care, always kind, always approachable, and never rushing a moment. She brings a calm presence and a quiet wisdom that makes all the difference when your world feels upside down. I used another service for in-home euthanasia because Dr. Huter wasn't yet with Heartstrings at the time, but I would have chosen her in a heartbeat, no question. I can’t think of anyone better suited to guide families through such a tender, emotional experience. She lives what she does, she has five animals of her own and is absolutely doing the work she was meant to do. If you're facing this unimaginable time, I urge you: keep your pets at home, in their safe and familiar space, and let Dr. Huter be there to walk you through it. I can’t recommend her enough.

Dr. Huter has been such an important part of our lives and we would give her +1M stars if we could for this review. She has taken care of our dogs over the years, first Raven (black lab mix), then Rocky (boxer), and now Vinny (boxer). All rescues. Raven luckily has always had a pretty clean bill of health other than some anxiety that Dr. Huter has helped us manage she is still doing great! Rocky on the other hand has had some issues throughout the years, from minor lumps and bumps to more serious issues like heart & neurological issues and cancer. I first switched to Dr. Huter and her clinic when my now husband told me about his vet office and I was so surprised when Dr. Huter called me back on a Friday evening to help me with Rockys sickness. It meant the world to me and since then (6 years ago for me and 8 for my husband) we have always felt so comfortable, she explains things in a way that makes you understand and she can deliver good news in a great way (Rockys bump wasn't cancerous) to more serious bad news in a way that makes you know she will help you with a plan (Rocky has a heart murmur which ended up being a tumor with leaky valves and arrhythmia). She recommended a great cardiologist, neurologist, and oncologist (along with giving me other options as well depending on how we wanted to manage). Although Rocky had an army of a care team, when it came time to make the decision no one wants to make he had appointments scheduled with all of those specialists but my husband and I knew Dr. Huter was the only one we wanted to see. She had known Rocky throughout everything and would be honest with us. We called and she made time for us at the end of that clinic day and we went to her office. Still not knowing if it would be the end, she talked to us and explained to us what was going on with Rocky. With that, we made the hard decision with her by our side to say goodbye to our sweet boy. Without our trust in her, I would have still been questioning that decision, I can confidently say that not one day has gone by where we wonder if that was the right decision, because of Dr. Huter and the trust we have in her, we know that it was the best decision for Rocky and would make it again. Without that trust, I cant imagine what our days after would have looked like but we felt at peace knowing it was Rockys time. For all of you reading this because you have to make that hard decision, first off I am so sorry, but second, I can confidently say that there is no one else I would rather be there during a time like this. I do wish that Rocky could have been in his home (like this service will offer), but he was so conformable at Dr. Huters office that it made it ok for us to bring him in. We went to Rockys rescue to volunteer in his honor, and unexpectedly brought home another Boxer, Vinny who we got in to see Dr. Huter the day after bringing him home, the rescue told us he was being treated for worms, and ear infection, and happy tail but I felt confident we could take him and treat him in the care of Dr. Huter. She got Vinny back to great health so he can be the silly puppy he is today. She also has a great way of managing an anxious pet parent (embarrassingly like myself). She has had to explain to me why we would not* be running every test under the sun like I googled and she was always right. Or if we did have to run a test, she gave me all my options and explained why for each option. All that to say when it comes to pet care, especially at the end, trust means everything and being in the care of Dr. Huter you will have that trust, comfort, and peace. It will never be easy and all end of life circumstances are different, some come fast and some have longer preparation period but either way, she will be able to provide comfort that your pet is in their home, loved, and ultimately at peace. When the time comes for our sweet babies (hopefully a long time from now), we will be using this service. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to our family! Ryan, Jeannette, Rocky, Raven, & Vinny.

Dr Huter has cared for my pets since she first became a vet. She was so caring, gentle and compassionate both times she helped our dogs cross the Rainbow Bridge. She not only cared for our dog, she was also a wonderful source of comfort and strength. She answered all of our questions, took her time, and made sure our dog was comfortable. She’s an amazing vet and a wonderfully caring human. 💕

Dr. Huter has been wonderful with our three dogs, especially one who has always had a hard time with vet visits. She was kind, patient, and made every effort to help him feel comfortable. When he was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer during surgery, Dr. Huter handled the situation with incredible compassion and professionalism. She took the time to answer all of our questions and truly supported us through a very difficult time. We’re so grateful for her care and will always remember the way she treated our pup. We can’t recommend her enough.
