How to Save Money at Veterinary Care Group - Westbury

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Adding to the other great reviews here so that the word gets out how wonderful this veterinary practice is. Our dogs and cats over the years were going to a different vet for over 20 years, mostly by habit not because of the quality of care. We moved to the Westbury area in 2020 but continued to go to the old place, again out of habit. One of our cats developed diabetes in late 2022 and I then realized how unacceptable the care our pets were receiving was. Already stressed about our cat’s diabetes and now having to look for a new vet we could trust caused additional stress and worry. Based on VCG-Westbury’s reviews, we brought in our elderly cat in to get his diabetes and other health conditions evaluated and hopefully, managed. Luckily for us — the care at VCG-Westbury is excellent!! The office itself is clean and welcoming. The team and Dr. Colon are all welcoming and extremely professional. From scheduling, to arrival, the appointment, to instructions about what to do at home - everything is organized and anyone you communicate with at the office is willing to answer your questions. And more on Dr. Colon: she spends time assessing your fur babies and explaining what needs to be done. She provides patient (pet parent) education and instructions on next steps and what to expect. She is pleasant and patient (despite my many questions). I was so impressed with the care she provided to my elderly diabetic cat that I moved our other two cats and our dog over to VCG-Westbury, all of whom have received the same caring attention. I really regret that we only started seeing Dr. Colon now but I am so happy we decided to try their office at our cat’s lowest point in his life. We are grateful for Dr. Colon and the whole team and are wishing them continued success and growth. I highly recommend them for your fur babies’ healthcare.

I love the staff, the facilities, and the location! I am never disappointed. My dog Elmo and I are always treated with respect and courtesy. Every question I have is answered. Everything is explained in a loving way. I am never confused. In short, I am EXTREMELY happy and comfortable with the care my little Elmo receives!

This clinic is always amazing. My dogs receive the best care and the staff always go the extra mile. I truly feel comfortable leaving my pups in their care :) Nova had a dental today, and they made her this bag for her medications. I’m so thankful and grateful for their dedication

I found Vetinary Care Group at the Westbury location when my senior 14 year old Chihuahua Mocha needed dental surgery. I did see other vets prior, but none of them were right for us. My Mocha is no easy patient. She was a pup with an attitude, and particularly grumpy due to the pain she was having with her teeth. She did not want anyone near her mouth. But to my surprise, she allowed the whole team at this vet to open her mouth and inspect her teeth with no growling or aggression at all! That says A LOT. Dr Melissa Colon and the entire team was so informative and kind. Mocha ended up having several teeth out and the surgery was a success. Mochas attitude changed dramatically after she was healed from surgery. The teeth really bothered her and needed to get out. Office was super clean, and service was fast. Mocha heartbreakingly passed away a few months ago, but I wanted to share the positive experience we had with Vetinary Care Group-Westbury location. Thank you to the entire team!
