How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Service

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought my 3yo Bernese Mountain Dog (Charlie) in when he was refusing food which is unlike him. The staff were so caring and friendly. They were fully transparent with wait times and processes. Once my dog was taken back, they let us visit him multiple times. Unfortunately he ended up need needing surgery. Thankfully the vets, techs, and staff were so helpful through the process. I have my dog back home and he’s feeling great now. I can’t thank everyone enough at Animal Emergency Service for taking care of my Charlie :)

My dog was having an allergic reaction to either a bug bite or sting. The staff was caring and courteous from my initial phone call all the way through to the end of our visit. My dog is extremely fearful and they treated her with so much patience and kindness. They were quick to treat her and after an informative discussion with the doctor, we were on our way home. What was most impressive was their follow up text the next morning checking to see how our little girl was doing. They were happy to hear she was doing better and reminded me to reach out if I needed any further assistance.

We can’t begin to express how grateful we are for Long Island Animal Emergency Hospital and their dedicated staff who comforted us through our time of need. If it was not for the folks here who took the time with us and our beloved little girl Fudge and expressed that care and concern, we would have been devastated. They did everything possible to try and save our girls life, but there is a limit that was reached and they helped us cope with that end of life decision and held our hands to get us through to the other side. After all was said and done we would not hesitate to recommend this business. It’s not about money with these folks, they truly cared about our little girl as well as us. Our baby girl crossed the bridge of life in dignity thanks to these folks. With my husband on FaceTime I held her in my arms as she passed quietly.

This is my second time here and they did not disappoint. Even with construction happening in the front of the building, they were quick, responsive and extremely kind. The Dr. and staff were super thorough and you can tell that they really care for their patients. We even received a follow up text the following day to check in on how our dog was doing. I would recommend coming here.

I am so thankful that they are located so close to my home. I have 4 Siberian huskies and this is the 3rd time that either one of them or 3 of them needed medical attention on a weekend when my regular vet is closed or immediately and my regular vet is located too far away for me to take any chances that something may happen to put my pups life in danger before I got to my vet. I wish they did regular visits because I would definitely switch to them. They are reasonably priced, extremely knowledgeable and caring and all 3 experiences that I had with them showed me that I made the right choice to bring my boys there. My boys are my everything and I don't trust just anyone with them but I definitely trust this hospital and highly recommend them to everyone.
