How to Save Money at Lefferts Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been coming to Lefferts for a few years now. All I can say is they are very professional, and give you outstanding service. They are very reasonable and clear about all fares, and they truly care about your pet. Sadly, we had one of our cats pass away last year. Lefferts made the process seamless and were so empathic. They helped us with everything during our very difficult time. All the doctors and staff here are so kind, honest and knowledgeable. I don’t trust any other facility with my cats. If you’re looking to bring your pet, look no further. Thank you ❤️

I have been a client of Lefferts Animal Hospital for over nine years. What has amazed me is our most recent visit. Our senior cat Rose, needed her teeth, cleaned and one tooth, needed to be extracted. After her procedure was complete. We were not only pleased with how well her recovery went. We were amazed by the change of behavior. She behaves like a brand new cat. We are amazed. Moving forward I will not hesitate when it comes to dental care for our cats.

Got referred here by a friend and I’m so grateful. Everyone from the vets to the front desk are so kind, professional, and understanding. They really care about the animals and are more than fair on price. I also loved that they take their time explaining everything and don’t try to pressure you for procedures or make you feel bad if you can’t afford something. Instead they help you weigh your options to give your pet the best care. I only wish I found them sooner :)

Honestly I don’t recommend, the are more interested in money then actual treating the pet. They charged me for a ultrasound which at the end of day was seen by a regular vet who’s not specialized and then they tell me after it’s done that I need to send it to a specialist. When I try to send it the specialist they were trying to charge 200 so I left it as that. When I agree to it they end up telling me that they never had a specialist . So my question why was I going to be charged 200 for ? Be mindful taking your pet here because they really are money hungry .

I recently had a rather disappointing experience at my local veterinary clinic, and I feel compelled to share my feedback with fellow pet owners. As a responsible pet parent, I always ensure that I have visual documentation of any concerning symptoms exhibited by my furry friends. This practice has been encouraged by numerous veterinarians in the past, as it aids in their understanding and diagnosis of the issue at hand. However, during my recent visit to the clinic with my cat, who was experiencing bouts of vomiting and diarrhea, I was taken aback by the response of the attending veterinarian. Upon showing the veterinarian a picture of my cat's condition, I expected a professional assessment and suggestions for treatment. Instead, the vet made an unprofessional comment, stating, "That's gross." Such a remark, in my opinion, was highly unprofessional and not reflective of the expected level of conduct within a medical environment. It left me feeling both disheartened and disrespected as a client who seeks the utmost care for my beloved pet. I believe that professionalism and empathy are crucial qualities for any healthcare provider, including veterinarians. It is essential for them to maintain a respectful demeanor, even when presented with potentially unpleasant images or situations. This not only fosters trust between the veterinarian and the pet owner but also ensures a more effective diagnosis and treatment plan. While I understand that veterinary professionals may come across challenging situations, it is important to remember that their primary duty is to provide compassionate care to animals and support to their human companions. In this instance, a more tactful response would have been appreciated, along with a thorough examination and appropriate guidance to address my cat's health concerns. In conclusion, I hope that this review serves as constructive feedback to the veterinary clinic and encourages a reflection upon the importance of maintaining professionalism and empathy when dealing with concerned pet owners. It is my sincere wish that future clients receive the respectful and compassionate care that all pets and their owners deserve.
